Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / Re: Baby E30 M3 (318is, S/C)
« on: June 01, 2023, 09:11:42 AM »
Hey I got a question for you, bmwman91, or if anyone knows - [http://www.m42club.com/forum/index.php?topic=18499.0] Thank you for documenting it all so well, bmwman91!!! But from reviewing that I wanted to check on something - my wideband sensor (Innovate MTX-AL) setup doesnt have a separate ground for the narrowband signal, would it be ok to ground the ECU O2 ground signal to the global ground and use the sensor out for the O2 positive sense or is there a danger of screwing up the ECU in some fashion? It seems like you were battling some minor offset as a result of that on the LC1... The diagram looks like it may be all going to the same place, but all the different colored items are a bit confusing.

Hey yall, I am attempting to get my ol trusty 318is to perform on the level of an M3, I noted the main differences besides the obvious such as the body were obviously higher power output, bigger brakes, bigger wheels, and the 5-lug hubs, from what I gather so far. I already have a S52 swapped 318TI, so I'm ok in that department, and I want to experience as close to an M3 behavior as possible (since they became unobtanium lately), so I'm hoping to get the power of the motor up by about 50HP or so with relatively low boost, aiming for 5-7PSI. I would like to keep the boost low, to keep the engine as stock as possible (really dont want to touch the engine at all). Anyway, I also got a few upgrades for the car besides the aforementioned kit to get it to ride more sporty. They are H&R sport springs, bilstein sport shocks, Ronal LS 15x7.5s, and a club sport steering rack out of an E46, and a 370mm Mtech II steering wheel (albeit with a horrible rewrap job by yours truly).

Anywhoo, my biggest question mark here is the engine power. I'm working with a company making low cost supercharger kits for the M42 engines over in Germany to get their kit working on an E30. So far I've got a 1995 318ti engine in it, with all stock E30 intake + exhaust, but all the accessories are run with a serpentine belt off the TI, which will be including the supercharger.

My plan for the engine is to do the following:
* Connect my Innovate Wideband/Boost/Oil Gauges
* Install Bosch 785 S14/Volvo 850R 30# orange injectors
* Modify the fuel map ratio to account for the bigger injectors (on the EEPROM)

My question is - I'm new to the whole tuning and screwing with the fuel maps thing - last time I had a stock M44 on my 318ti before the engine swap, I ended up putting a Downing atlanta kit on it, but I used a RRFPR with it, AND 30lb red top injectors, and a midnight tuning tune on the ECU (After actually looking into all those things again, I realized that was not the way to do it at all...)

What would you guys recommend I do/read? I am assuming if I put the gauges and injectors in, and modify the fuel map, the stock ECU should be able to cope once I slap the SC unit on, but am I completely off base here?

Thanks in advance :)

I was able to complete all of the car stuff in 3 days of working about 4 hours a day on it!! Couldnt have done it without this forum!!!

THANK YOU GUYS!!!

Hey! Just wanted to let you all (whoever read this) :) know that I have completed my project almost...

One thing thats left is dialing in the power steering and getting the A/C working (as my engine is from a 1995 TI, and I didnt touch the original AC system, maybe ground down the bracket for it to fit on the engine)

BUT... I got all H&R Sport Gray Springs, all sport bilstein shocks (fronts are brand new), complete new exhaust, spare O2 sensor, brand new brakes, and a ton of other spare parts)

Now have a ton of projects, and a few issues...

I dont know if any of you had dealt with the annoying E46 problem of the subframe getting all ripped out, etc etc... But I Have a 2001 325 that I fear has that very problem, or if it doesnt, it may in the future, so I would like to repair it right and give it to a decent body shop that would install and weld the reinforcement plates in.

Another reason why I need a good body shop is to fix the E30 as well, it has accumulated minor dents here and there, as well as rust, so I would really like to fix it properly (for as cheap/quality repair as possible), so whether I keep it or sell it I would feel good about it going to a good home.

318ti ftw!!! But really though, the 318is just might be one of the greatest budget cars ever made, and they are so relatively simple to work on (i will have to do a side by side comparison when I get mine out here)

Good luck with the sale!!! Seeing these things sell for thousands gives me strength to put thousands into them :)

One more "n00b" question - would the headgasket go bad for any reason if the car was sitting for 2 years with coolant running through it once about a year ago?

I have the full set, but I would like to find out if it makes sense to do it or not, because that would save a few hours of me working all over.

Thanks!

Thanks!

Also, currently I looked all over and I cant find those coolant routing aluminum brackets that go around the throttlebody, and I would love to find those so I can pass inspection in CA. If you have a complete set of hoses and parts, that would be even better!

I threw them out because of my stupidity, but I really need them now, so if anyone parted an engine, please let me know!!!

Thank you!

Good call! I will make a "package" for my car over here with the tools required and such, ship it over, and follow on a plane. I got a bunch of spare Pentosin fluid and oil filters, etc..

Kind of anxious to fix it, thats how insane I am :)

Thanks!

Thanks Dave!

I just bought a complete brake set, an exhaust system and a headgasket set. This leaves all the engine hoses and a few tidbits here and there... Good advice on running it though! I will definitely do that first thing when I get there.

Any thoughts on whether the engine seals that werent leaking would leak after sitting?

Thus far I know I have to change the oil for sure, as its about 2 years old.

Thanks guys!

Hi Dave, Thank you for a great suggestion! I have had awesome experience with pelican parts myself, but being in CA, the shipping was sort of expected to be quick.

Knowing that their shipping is quick cross country gives me a bit of a relief in dealing with them now that the deadline is coming up soon.

I was hoping to get a complete exhaust system used, just in case my CAT was worn out from sitting (completely guessing on that), otherwise I would think it would be really expensive. I think I should just check out some junkyards to see if theres any there.
