Suspension / Spring Rates - 318is
« on: July 16, 2010, 04:17:22 AM »
I decided to do some research into spring rates as I was finding the car a little wallowy on the Eibach springs when driving in a 'spirited' manner :)

Anyway, I emailed the major spring manufacturers expecting little information to come my way but suprisingly I have received spring rate details (for the 318is / 4 cyl springs) from HnR, Eibach and Apex. Here it is:-

(@ 1 N/mm = 5.71 lb/in)

Apex 20-1020 (4 cylinder, -30mm)

Front - 29 N/mm = 166 lb/in
Rear - 52 N/mm = 297 lb/in

I was informed that the X Low kit (-60mm) is about the same stiffness, it just requires shortened shocks.

H&R 29663 (4 cylinder, -40mm):-

http://www.h-r.com/includes/download.php?file=../bin/29663.pdf

Front - 33 N/mm = 188 lb/in
Rear - 50 N/mm = 286 lb/in

Eibach Pro Kit E2003-240 (4 cylinder, -35mm)

http://performance-suspension.eibach.de/search/model/send_file_as_attachment/Model?aux=386462&field=abe_www

Front - 20 N/mm - 114 lb/in
Rear - 46 to 57 N/mm - 262 to 325 lb/in

I have bought some Apex springs to try but will be looking to develop my own springs in the near future :)

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / 2.0l M42
« on: June 04, 2010, 01:17:29 PM »
Suprised that TimS hasn't been on this thread. He's got a 2.1 M42 in his E30, using an 88mm diesel crank and custom 87mm pistons by Metric Mechanic (I think, or JE). Engine is running mild cat cams, flowed head, bored TB and was on Megasquirt but also runs OK on Motronic with different injectors. Power was about 190-200bhp on the rollers and torque is great, especially low down, much better than the stock engine or even my M44, ideal for sprinting / autotest. There's also the option or running the 90mm crank for a torquier still engine. It was a lot of work but the results are worth the effort.

Engine + Driveline / E36 Long Block into E30

I have an M44 in my E30.

Requires the E30 sump and flywheel. You can leave the serpentine belt setup on the front and use the E36 alternator and PAS pump, does require a little modification to the pipes.

This still uses the E30 ECU rather than the E36 item and E30 head.

155-160bhp at the fly. The M42 engine has a few flat spots but once you're about 4.5k RPM it flies. Did some 0-60 runs on my GPS logger and an average of 10 runs was 6.85s. Happy with that :) Looking forward to getting the 205/50R15s to replace the 205/55R15s and give a bit more shove and better handling, unfortunately it'll mean that I need 3rd for 0-60 so that will drop. Tempted to get a 4.4 diff in there and make it a real screamer :D

Mods to the engine are M44 block, regrind cams, E30zone chip, 2.25" exhaust, air filter, modified airbox, viscous fan removed.

What are you planning on doing? I'm runnig Eibach springs and whilst they're great when you're cruising about, they're not up to the job when you press on.

Interior / E30 dial upgrade - 8k+ tacho, 160mph speedo

I had left this project as initial reaction wasn't too strong and it was quite a bit of money to invest in a gamble. I'll get back on it next month and see where I get to with it. I'll need to see what the company makes with regards to kmh speedos but would hope to have a full set made.

Bilstein B12 kit, full rebush using OE parts except for front offset poly control arm bushes. Car drives and rides really well, springs are a little soft for track use though.

Stock BBS crossposkes with 205/55R15 Michelin PE2s, needs 205/50s really IMO.

Most aftermarket ECUs allow for WBO2 and other toys to be fitted to look after your engine better than the relatively simple Motronic system on the E30 M42.

I tried to catch it on video with Tom driving but it really didn't do it justice. We can put the drilled 'box on the 2.1 when it's in :D

LOL, getting a little excited Timmy :) Another 200rpm then, still sounds great above 7k so that's a 66% increase in post 7k grin factor :D

Ignoring the differences in opinion, it runs nicely and that's what matters, I'd be suprised if the power wasn't somewhere inbetween the two graphs posted. The atmospheric conditions on the day were poor, low pressure and reasonably high temperature, with some nice winter air and high pressure it would be very strong indeed, remember the silver Golf made 141+ in the frost and 138 was the best it made in higher temperatures. Obviously it's all corrected but even so, it makes a little difference.

The drilled airbox on the S2 has helped with breathing quite a bit up top, the same as an RS2 airbox would as it has a enlarged inlet trumpet, no reason for it not to help on the IS, it's got a good feed of cold air and reduces the pressure drop in the airbox a little, fractions all add up... hence why the S2 is so strong compared to other examples that are the same spec.

None of it matters anyway, as long as the S2 has 300+ then that's the important thing :)

Good girl, it's the 3 months of lying that' I'm offended by  Can you add luxo-barge to 'E46 330ci daily' please...

Power is going up nicely at the end so a further 500rpm and the drilled airbox will have helped. That must have been the only 5 mins that MS ran properly on that car :p

It's the 2.1 lie that's wrong mate :p

That engine is strong as an ox, Pete will look after it as a track toy soon :)

Here's the RR printout from my car, it's no longer on MS but has an evolution chip giving a further 500rpm, should be easily the same as the MS as it was never quite right.
