Engine management / Re: M40 AFM Compatible with M42?
« on: March 28, 2013, 09:22:33 PM »
I think I have tried it, the M42 engine ran fine with the M40 AFM but then I didn't use it for long term...

Better atomization....

The attached article is good.. The tuner was generous in sharing his in-depth understanding and experience tuning dual bank fuel-injection.

But this one only single bank but placed further up the runners. more for race application rather than for street...

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / M42 race engine

Damn.. that's a lot of blood, sweat and $$$ going into this build....

My wishlist set up is 86 x 81 (with lightened stock crank)..

And yes, the M42 ports are bigger than average for a 1.8L motor.. it's a gem of an engine... powerful and hardy even in stock form... Mine dynoed at 126rwhp. it's a fun car to drive especially on the B-roads.

Anyone here tried a single throttle setup with long runners to a big volume intake plenum instead of ITB setup, with additional bank of 4 injectors further up the intake runners (for high rev range only)...
The 2nd bank of injectors further up the intake port, in theory, allows better air/fuel mixture especially for high rpm range where the intake air velocity is high.

The tricky part is to set up the ECU to control the 2 sets of injectors especially the switchover point where the original bank of injectors has to be shut off completely. And maybe the 2nd bank of injectors has to start squirting fuel a wee bit sooner before the 1st bank is shut off (due to the longer distance from the intake port).

This M42 from Thailand is running 2 banks of injectors (http://www.bangkokclassiccar.com/forum/index.php?topic=19247.360)

Engine + Driveline / will E36 M42 intake clear hood E30 ?

I have the E36 m42 in my RHD E30, replacing a M40.. it clears both the hood and the stock brake booster...

Exterior / iS lip- body color or black?
« on: November 15, 2010, 04:58:25 AM »
depends how often u go on long distance drives beyond legal speed limit... Stone chips on the lips would be quite noticeable since the paint on the plastic lip would be softer...

latest attempt to break the 3:00 barrier... better timing with stickier street performance tyres but still haven't gone under 3 mins..

Based on my GPS  lap timer, here are the times for the 4 flying laps.
3:03.0 (lap 1 in video)
3:01.1 (lap 2 in video)
3:00.6 (camera out of memory)  :(
3:00.6 (camera out of memory)  :(

Shud be able to dip below 3:00 without the passenger and also the spare tire. :D

Engine + Driveline / M3 3.2 6speed gearbox to an M42

Spoke to a guy who prepared a fair few WRC/group A/historic race and rally cars.. he said that cut and weld a shaft is perfectly feasable... people who build custom trucks/semi trailers are quite ok.

he did it with 3 cars, one did the london sydney marathon back in '93
and after that: cape to cape... clocked up a fair few miles... never had a problem
(Rover P5B with a 3,5L V8 ~ 250/300 BHP)

of cos it's feasible, when our stock shaft is welded together. just that u need to specialist to get it done proper with balancing. If the shaft is off balance, it's very irritating to drive.. Minor one would be slight vibration during take off.

Engine + Driveline / M3 3.2 6speed gearbox to an M42
« on: October 29, 2010, 09:30:11 AM »
The only thing is to source for the right length drive shaft.. Maybe the shorter shaft from the E30 M20 can be used..
Length of the shifter link and the shifter holder can be modified without much hassle.

I guess for a start, measurements of the stock G240 gearbox and driveshaft (the front portion) would be good.

The M42 has the same gearbox bellhousing bolt pattern with the M5x and S5x inlie 6 engines.. So it's compatible with a lot of gearboxes... only issue is sourcing the right length of the short shaft... unless you're adventurous enuf to cut and reweld the shaft to the required length..

the gearbox will fit... just that u'll need to find the right lenght of the drive shaft to mate with the longer 6 speed gearbox..
