Engine + Driveline / Engine dead? What's wrong?
« on: July 08, 2008, 12:50:22 PM »
I'd rule out the big problems first, do a compression test on all cylinders.  If that comes back ok, it's either spark or fuel prob.  Good luck!

I'm dealing with the same problem.  I haven't had much time to really pin point the problem yet, but it's probably just your ICV.  Try cleaning it.  I'm leaning towards my fuel pump struggling to stay alive, but I've ruled out a lot of stuff so far.  I had a complete no start to kick off my cold start idle joys! haha.  Only once though, odd.  Think it's my pump...

Salty admins rule!

I don't daily drive my car, so it's a bit easier for me to run premium since I don't fill up much luckily.  We're up to $4.25 for regular downtown!!  Not sure where premium is at, I filled a full tank over mother's day in the sticks that should last me a bit.

Anyways, I have enough blood, sweat, and tears, let alone funds in my car to go by the owner's manual.  To each their own though I guess.  been reading this thread for a bit, it's been a fun one for m42club.com =)  Finally felt like chiming in.  It is a high-compression, high-revving 4 banger.  I'd rather have it to spec, so I can rev it without any nagging worries in the back of my mind.  To me, that's worth the extra $.20 a gallon.

Bought a couple of parts from Christopher.  Pretty good communication, well packed, and parts as described.  Overall, a good transaction.

nice.  Can't wait to see the results of both of your projects.  I always loved that black car, one of my favorite E30's when Febi posted pics with that mean MM motor =)  Keep the pics coming.

Engine + Driveline / Strange engine noise, please help
« on: May 09, 2008, 10:22:43 AM »
Taking off the valve cover is super easy man =)  Removing the plug wires is the hardest part, just have some tape and a Sharpie on hand so you get the wires back on the right plugs....  You need one of these me thinks:

And more importantly for these specific m42 problems, download this!

Talk to Patrick, and make sure to get your m42club.com discount ;)

There are other parts places on the web and elsewhere as well.

From what I remember, you were getting really bad chain noise.  Tensioner is probably not going to cut it, you'll probably have to do the same thing.  Did you pull the valve cover to check the sprockets and/or drop the pan to look for carnage?

Edit: meant whole thing, not same thing.

I just picture a chain when I listen to those vids.  It sounds bumpy, like a chain, if that makes sense.  But that's listening to a video over the intra-webs.

The previous poster speaks wisdom.  Do a compression test, then do the steps to get your timing covers off.  Post pics when you do ;)

Sorry, haven't been on the forums for a few days to try to answer your lifter question.  I see that it was answered in the other thread.  I really think your problem lies more in the timing components.  You can find detailed instructions on this job in the E36 service manual available on this site in PDF form.  Pretty straightforward, but a big job nonetheless.

I would guess lifters as well, definitely sounds like a diesel.  I'd pull the VC and turn the engine over by hand to watch oil flowing through your lifters.  I'd also check/replace your chain tensioner.  It is also hydraulic, and mine started to give a whirling sound this Chicago winter when cold.  I guess it could be severe chain slap?  Mine was more of a whirl.  Check your timing gears, mine need replacement at 78k.  I also use lighter weight oil in the winter, it helps a lot with cold starts in the severe cold.

Luckily, I've put a total of a 100 miles tops on my car this winter, and that was mostly to my buddies heated garage to work on some stuff =)  They salt like crazy here, and I train commute.  For the most part, I have a healthy low mileage engine with great compression.  It still hates the severe cold starts, and get's a bit loud 15F or colder.  I think when I get my timing chain replaced, it will smooth out a bit and a new tensioner helped a ton with noise last time I started it ~10F.  I haven't driven much on the new tensioner due to the scary look of my cam sprockets!  Moving at the end of the month is setting me back financially on getting the parts I need to put it back into my comfort zone to hit the upper revs...

Engine + Driveline / M42 Oil Pressure & Lifter Tick
« on: March 04, 2008, 05:24:23 PM »
Oil light on for 5 seconds sounds suspect.  That never happens to me, even with sub-zero temps.  I use thinner oil, but I live in a colder climate and switch out for the winter.  Maybe pull the lower pan to check for bolts/timing components blocking the oil pump.  It's important to do on our cars anyhow.

Nice low mileage car!  Mine only has 78k and I'm currently collecting parts for a timing chain/gear replacement.  My gears are pointy as hell, even with my low miles.  Pan checked clean at least

Edit: tjts1 beat me to it typing this up at work!

You might have better luck in Canada.  The one I took pics of was imported from Vancouver.  Don't think any were initially imported to the US, they came via Canada.  There are some "gray" market tourings around though.  Good luck ;)
