Engine + Driveline / M47 crankshaft question
« on: October 09, 2011, 01:32:17 AM »
Look around for dirt track / circle track clubs there are swap meets all over.

The Midget race cars use smaller dry sump pumps that would rock for a M42/44.

I've seen pumps in the $250 range, youll need the pump, oil filter mount (50 bucks), dry sump pan (Can be hand built if your a fair mig welder), and use good hose (200ish), Aeroquipe, Goodrich, NOT push on or hose clamped. A used 10 to 12 quart tank is < 100 bucks if you keep on it. Pulleys are another piece, probably < 150 if you are tenaciously cheap like me. LOL

Suspension / GroundControl Coilover Spring Rate Recomendations?
« on: October 09, 2011, 01:12:32 AM »
Spring rate depends on what you want to do with the car....

BMW touring cars use rates up to 1900 lbs. !!
Many street cars run < 400.

I'd look at the part numbers that fit the sport kits, the spring rate is usually in them.

Engine + Driveline / M47 crankshaft question

If I was thinking of a big stroker with the M47 ,,, I'd dry sump the engine.
Your already spending the big $$. A small 3 stage would be more than enough.
They can be found fairly reasonably priced at swap meets and they are fully
rebuild-able most of the time. Dry sumping can add significant HP and with a
turbo setup solves all the drain issues.

Just a thought...

Engine + Driveline / Oxygen Sensor fails again after 25 miles
« on: May 11, 2011, 01:37:14 AM »
Any leak in the intake behind the air meter will toss a O2 code.

I'm betting vacume leak or bad injector.. Lean = vacume leak, rich usually a bad injector.

My 1995 had a TINY cracks in the air boot to the throttle body from the air cleaner. Caused everything from a O2 code to accelerated global warming according to the codes it was throwing...

Mine is very fast on the high speed, so fast it has to be a major deluge to make it useful.

Interior / fuel pressure gauge install?

Use an electric sender gauge, never bring fuel into the dash.. :)

You get what you pay for with gauges...

A stuck injector will fail an O2 in a few minutes, the bright side is if its an injector, once you fit a new one it will usually burn clean.

I found that several of my local auto parts stores carry the O2 for less than 100 and no matter what box its in its got a Bosche stamp on it... Even the correct connector.

Engine + Driveline / Thoughts on Engine Internals
« on: April 29, 2011, 02:47:45 AM »
If you can find one, there is/was a tool that you put in the bore with the piston down about 20MM and it will allow you to cut the valve reliefs deeper, I think its a MAC tool. Have not seen one for years.. But it may still be out there... The cutter was powered by a drill. It had a 4 blade cutter that woudl allow you to relieve the piston cuts depth and radius.

Suspension / Advice: Cross Brace 93 E36 M42 318i
« on: April 26, 2011, 03:34:34 AM »
The only downside of a top strut tower brace is if you get tagged from the side in front its more likely that the WHOLE front end is toast..

Handling wise I've only found a couple cars that didn't feel tighter in hard turns with one.

Worst case it looks cool LOL

The upper helps tighten the car up, for that little money I'd order it, and get the lower xbrace off ebay about 170 bucks.

For Sale / FS: H&R 20mm spacers (4) WITH extended lugs
« on: April 25, 2011, 11:44:30 PM »
I've used H&R on race cars doing well north of 120MPH never had a problem.
They are very hub centric, the hubs have to be wicked clean. AS long as the hubs are  clean they are within .0001 flat front to rear out of the box. )I mic'd several sets with a good mic on a flat precision stone block.

Engine + Driveline / Oil Pump Pickup
« on: April 24, 2011, 01:16:18 AM »
If it was done carefully you could machine the hole round and press a new pickup tube in and put a pickup off another engine in the bottom of the new pan.

Good Luck!

Engine + Driveline / Oil Pump Pickup
« on: April 20, 2011, 11:23:05 PM »
Looks to me like the square hole is the pickup and the other hole is the oil pump pressure relief valve. It recirculates the oil if it works like a regular oil pump relief valve.

I'd definitely use a wire to trace them...
