Engine + Driveline / interesting idle, click noise
« on: February 25, 2018, 01:37:46 AM »
so my car idles at around either 500 or 800 rpm, no in betweens. it switches periodically, and each time there is a prominent click. it sounds like it's from around the intake manifold, but i don't have the best ear. i might link a video tomorrow if i'm not lazy. is it possible the icv is sticky, and that's causing the periodic click? i cleaned it out pretty recently, would it be wise to take it out and give it another clean? or is there any other suggestions? the starts are also a little jumpy, but succeed every time. it's really not obstructive or anything, and i kind of believe in the "if it works don't fix it" mindset, but it'd be real nice to have a smoother idle if it's a cheap fix. thanks!

well, the sound disappeared completely, i have no idea why, but it's gone. seems like it only lasted a couple days. don't know if a should be relieved or concerned, lol. but on the topic of thick oils, i'm running 15w-40. will this even be okay to run in the winter?

hmmm... could be, but the tensioner was replaced fairly recently by the previous owner (about two years ago). would be strange to have it fail so early

Engine + Driveline / ticking-like sound
« on: August 17, 2017, 11:18:13 PM »
hey guys, i've suddenly developed a strange noise. it seems to be loudest near the valve cover. here's a video of it: https://youtu.be/ueNmiEsDqPs

the sound goes away once the engine is warmed up.

may or may not be correlated, but i did also notice my oil level drop a little quicker than it usually does, it was about 7/10ths to the top line of the dipstick when i checked.

thanks!

Engine + Driveline / Cooling System Pressure Test
« on: August 11, 2017, 12:28:39 AM »
I have the tools to do one, I'm just wondering what pressure I should pump it up to when doing the test. I can't seem to find it anywhere. It's a 1995 E36 318i. Thanks!

General Topics / Radiator Drain Plug
« on: May 21, 2017, 11:50:17 PM »
So I was draining the coolant out so I could replace some of the cooling components, and as I was unscrewing the drain plug and all hell was breaking loose, it decided it didn't want to come out. Now my garage is drenched with coolant. Anyways, every time the plastic plug is on the verge of coming out, it "clicks" right back into place, and it does this over and over again. Any ideas? Thanks.

Engine + Driveline / Engine Stalling at Idle, Code 1215
« on: May 07, 2017, 05:00:21 PM »
Hey guys. My engine stalls when attempting to idle. I replaced the intake boot to no results (it seemed to have cracks). I'm planning to clean out the ICV and check the hoses next, but I found a strange symptom, where if I disconnect and reconnect the battery, it temporarily fixes the issue and results in a nice, smooth idle (the CEL also disappears). But the problem just comes back after a little bit. When the problem is present, a gassy smell becomes quite present, so I figure that it's running rich. Thought this might help narrow down the issue so I don't have to do anything I don't have to do. Thanks!

Lol, I never hear good things about Uro. Anyways, installed a new boot (OEM) and the problem persisted. Then the next day I went to start it up again and it started up really smoothly, no fluctuation, was able to hold a steady idle. Did a second start to see if it was only a one time thing. Still smooth. Then a third for good measure, and voila, the problem was back. Any ideas?

Thanks a lot man. I was almost certain that wasn't the problem until I examined it very, very closely... Seems like some small cracks developed after moving it around to access the air filter. I'll report back to see if replacing that fixes the issue.

This probably sounds ridiculous but I managed to screw up something as simple as changing the air filter. I unclipped it, took out the old one, put in the new one (that's literally all I did) and then the code popped up (1215) along with the inability to hold an idle at all. Confused as to what could have gone wrong with something so simple. Thanks.

Hey guys, new here, so pardon me if this has been addressed already. I figured it'd be a good idea to replace some cooling system components as my car ages. Which parts are the most crucial to replace? The water pump and thermostat have already been done. Thanks!
