Engine + Driveline / Re: M42 Engine Block
« on: February 20, 2017, 08:57:13 AM »
Thanks
I don't have the vin, both engines I'm looking at are out of the cars...
I was told by a fellow that does allot of M42 work and modes that the block and the head are the same through 1995, it's the intakes, oil pans, wiring harness that's different??

Engine + Driveline / M42 Engine Block
« on: February 18, 2017, 05:52:00 PM »
I'm in search of a good short block. Are all M42 blocks the same? I know the E36 has different intakes, oil pan and so on but are the blocks interchangeable? I have a 91 318is and I found a 93 318is complete engine in great condition, I plan to only use the block and put on all my extras.
Thanks for any info on this, I searched an couldn't find a answer on the blocks only

Engine + Driveline / Re: High crankcase pressure
« on: February 10, 2017, 08:51:22 AM »
Your both are right...
I shot some oil in #1 and the compression jumped to 140, did it again with no oil and back to 90
Put some Lucas injector cleaner in for a overnight soak hoping it would free a ring up and it went up to 95
The cylinder walls are smooth with no lip still showing cross hatching.
Any ideas on what can be done besides a tear down?

Engine + Driveline / High crankcase pressure
« on: February 08, 2017, 04:39:14 PM »
I have a 91 M42 that I've put a turbo on. Had a problem with smoke but found out it was the turbo seal leaking into the exhaust side.
I originally thought it was a head gasket so I got a .098 Cometic and ARP bolts, after install I had high crankcase pressure, oil bubbling out of the dip and oil mist coming out of the oil catch can breather. So I did it again this time using a OEM BMW head gasket, same results!!!
Compression's are 90,180,172,172
Any idea what else could cause this, pistons and cylinder walls look great...

« on: December 19, 2016, 06:58:30 PM »
I made the mistake of building up a Turbo on a stock high mileage engine and I need a good built M42 long block for my 91 318is.
Anybody know of one??

Engine + Driveline / Blue Smoke
« on: December 17, 2016, 07:09:09 PM »
Hi All I'm a newbie...

I've been building up a 1991 318is with a Turbo and she's running great but I seem to have a problem after spirited driving an cornering I get allot of blue smoke out the exhaust and oil catch can filter?? after driving mostly straight even under boost no smoke??
I was about 1/3 of a quart over the high mark on the dip, so I lowered to the fill  line and it still did it?
When I serviced it with new filter it took 6 quarts but was a little over, not now that I drained some, probably has 5 1/2 + in it now

Are the M42s sensative to this or do I have another issue??
Thanks All
