Engine + Driveline / Re: Fuel Pressure Regulator Leak - 91' 318i
« on: April 26, 2017, 04:17:38 PM »
I'd take some time to R&R those FPR o-rings. This is one of those cases that I'd use the pricey OEM updated ones, or a quality alternative. They're made from a far superior material, usually in a pretty lime green color. The older black rubber material isn't quite as resistant to oxygenated fuels.

Okay Ill splurge this time :p Do you happen to know the p/n for the rings I need? Or if they're even sold separately? I checked out a brand new FPR from rockauto that includes the o-rings, and its about 70$ cad and the most expensive one is at 150$ cad.

Engine + Driveline / Fuel Pressure Regulator Leak - 91' 318i
« on: April 26, 2017, 10:50:00 AM »
So i recently refreshed some of the fuel system, I replaced the stock injectors with some mustang ones and the o-rings on the FPR with some generic ones and the short fuel lines going to the rail. I hadto bend the flange a little bit on the fuel rail to pry off the FPR.

When I got the car idling, it had a pretty bad misfire and fuel was leaking from the FPR. I was wondering if anyone knew if it had to be in a specific orientation? Or does the o-rings on the FPR specific to it? The generic o-rings are a little thinner than the original ones. And the FPR I knew was working originally.

Thanks for any help!

Engine + Driveline / Quick question about the valve cover gasket
« on: January 05, 2017, 04:32:14 PM »
Excuse my inexperience but does anyone know if its okay to re use the original valve cover/spark plug gaskets. I've been wanting to inspect my valve train for a while now but am a little nervous about the 20+ year old rubber. I figure when I take off the valve cover, i'll coat the old gasket in some oil before re installing it, is there anything else I'm missing?? And yes I will be buying a new set of gaskets soon but I don't want to wait  :P

Thanks!

I'll keep an eye out for that harness. That can cause a lot of random trouble, especially if it's one of the crank sensor wires. Did you download the electrical troubleshooting manual? That will give you wire colors, so you'd have an idea what was damaged. Unfortunately the ETM is separated circuit by circuit, so you'd have a lot of pages to look at before you'll get an answer. The '91 318iS ETM is missing a few pages. I downloaded the '92 iC ETM instead, it's complete.

I did, i saw your post on another thread like a month back about the 92' manual, thanks btw

I'm a a little confused...you have raw fuel dripping from the exhaust?!? :o You're sure it isn't water condensation mixed with unburned fuel, right? I'm not criticizing here, just trying to get a grip on the problem.

The 1215 code is an O2 sensor out of range, not a big deal. Revving past 3500 RPM is probably heating the sensor up enough to get the proper 0~1vdc output signal. The O2 reading is basically ignored until the car is warmed up, so this isn't a big deal right now.

Tell me more about the wiring box & harness. That's all pretty important stuff.

What kind of plugs did you use? I'd avoid the Bosch Platinums and use conventional NGK or Bosch plugs. I've had more than a few cars with running problems due to those Platinum plugs.

Ya, I double checked that it was actual fuel dribbling out of the muffler drain hole. Regarding the harness, initially I thought I had switched the coolant temp plugs, but I went back to double check for the single pin plug was in the sensor for the temp gauge and they were in right. Also the temp gauge itself wasn't pegged right off the bat. Like I mentioned, I also went back to clean out all the plugs that I touched with the cleaner I linked. The harness I found pinched had some exposed bare wire which I am hoping is the cause. At the moment, I have some refreshed 280 150 556 injectors ready to go, I want to get a new coolant temp sensor and I'm looking for a good condition injector harness bit. The harness part looks like:

As for the spark plugs, they were a brand new set of NGK BKR6EK 2288 plugs. When I pulled them, they were all carbon'd up pretty bad, electrode and porcelain. Dry though, no oil or any fluids on them. I was considering giving them a quick clean with some brake cleaner but I don't know yet.

Welcome to the 'club! It's a bit quiet around here, hopefully a few other members will join in.

Your car is a virtual twin to mine, except for color. That looks like a really clean car!

The M42 isn't at it's best on the track, although the E30 chassis is delightful. Be sure to check the upper oil pan bolts and the cam gear teeth.

Thanks for the heads up! Ya I want to do refresh as much of the engine as I can at home including what you mentioned so i don't grenade the engine..
