"I'll write a list of what actually works instead.
- steering rack is excellent.
- suspension is good enough to highlight the woeful chassis flex
that's it."

That made me laugh. Nice one.

Let us know how well the car idles when that pencil eraser deteriorates from the heat of your engine:eek:

I'm sure you did that as a temporary measure, but you may want to consider investing in a proper vacuum cap similar to these: http://www.holley.com/26-105.asp:D

Oh man, that's what I need! Thanks a bunch. Pencil eraser update. It's gone bullet hard. Gonna be interesting extracting it as it seems to have been sucked in a fair way.

the hose that connects there goes to the purge solenoid on top of the charcoal canister, http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=AF93&mospid=47305&btnr=13_0205&hg=13&fg=15 (its a terrible picture on realoem) the hose that is missing is # 2

Many thnanks for the replies guys. I've now know there should be a hose connected to the solenoid/charcoal canister. However, my 318is is a UK model and doesn't seem to have a charcoal canister.

I've had no problems for 4 years and I can't work out how a hose can just come loose and completely disappear. On the other hand, how can this have been exposed all this time without vacuum problems?

Confused of London.

You need to deal with all the vac hoses on or near the intake. There are 3 hoses that attach to the TB. Which one are you talking about.

Thanks for reply. The nipple/short pipe I'm referring to is marked with a small red "?" in first diagram in:

http://www.m42club.com/forums/showthread.php?p=49773

In my 318is, the nipple/pipe is exposed with no obvious dangling hose come loose. Is it as simple as losing a nipple/dust cover? I've now bunged up the short pipe and engine idles sweetly. Without this, idle/engine is highly erratic. There is an obvious sucking in of air through this inlet when not closed off.

My 318is is UK spec.

There appears to be a hose come loose/missing leaving a small pipe coming out of throttle. It's sucking in air causing engine to idle erratically. When I put my finger over it, engine runs normally.

My question is, what connects here (see photo)? There is no obvious sign of a missing/disconnected hose. Can I simply seal this off? I'm really confused as to how this became 'open' as my car has run smoothly for last 4 years. All of a sudden, this!!
