Engine + Driveline / Question about installing ebay chip
« on: May 29, 2007, 05:04:34 PM »
I found the right size torx driver in my roomates toolbox, it wasn't labeled so I can't confirm the size but its in.

First impression is that it didn't do a damn thing. Possibly a bit smoother, maybe a little more torque up high but the butt dyno isn't registering any significant gains.

General Topics / Has Anyone Modded Their Stock Exhaust?
« on: May 29, 2007, 05:01:53 PM »
I have a dynomax welded on to my exhaust. Its a drastic improvement over the Bosal OEM equivalent muffler I had previously but its not a desirable sound in my opinion. Given the options out there I think this is the best bang for your buck, considering you are not going to get any noticeable power gains by going with a more expensive aftermarket setup.

Electrical / Do You Have Jittery Guages?
« on: May 13, 2007, 08:20:40 PM »

My water temp and fuel guages have been intermittent and shaky since I got the car about 2 years ago.

The odometer quit so while I had the cluster out to replace the gears I took a look at the two trouble makers. Found that they just clip into the circuit board yet have a threaded shaft that sticks through the back of the cluster. The threaded shaft is part of the electrical circuit and there is a pad on the circuit board for it.

I cleaned up the contact pads and found two nuts and washers of appropriate size and locked the two guages down. So far not a jiggle out of either guage.

Also, while I had the cluster out, I spliced in two wires into the blue connector harness and added an additional low oil pressure light that lives next to the rear window defrost switch.

One of these days I'll install a proper oil pressure guage.

Hope this helps someone.

How did you replace the gears in your odometer?

Engine + Driveline / Aluminum flywheel options
« on: April 30, 2007, 12:33:09 PM »
BMP will probably be the way I go if I get a new flywheel. I'm having a hard time justifying putting an extra $500 over the $700-800 a new clutch + labor is going to run me when the car itself is only worth ~$2500

So it appears that I will need a new clutch in the near future, so I am starting to weigh my flywheel options. I am leaning towards a lightweight aluminum flywheel over the m20 conversion because it appears to be easier to install.

I have found the JB Racing one on TMS
http://www.turnermotorsport.com/html/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=520-040-215

and the one on BMP's site which doesn't list manufacturer but is $130 cheaper then TMS
http://www.bmpdesign.com/product-exec/product_id/1191/search_year/1991/search_model/31

Are there any other options out there, can any one comment on the BMP flywheel?

Engine + Driveline / Strange sound when clutch is pressed in
« on: April 25, 2007, 12:45:58 AM »
If the throwout bearing is the problem, what does that mean to me in the short term? Is this something I should get in to a shop asap to have looked at or is it something that I can let ride? Also what would be involved for repair?

Engine + Driveline / Strange sound when clutch is pressed in
« on: April 24, 2007, 10:24:52 PM »
When the clutch is pressed in there is a slight vibration in the pedal and a noise that sounds like a loose belt spinning. When I release the clutch pedal the noise goes away.

The noise is audible in neutral or any gear, its not too loud, I don't notice it unless the windows are down. I just noticed this a couple days ago and as much as I've been looking for an excuse to get a lightened flywheel i'd rather not have to do any major work right now. Any thoughts?

I have a dynomax and think it sound great .

My last car was a WRX catless with a Prodrive muffler. Lets just say that is a tough act to follow.

Engine + Driveline / Dynomax muffler
« on: April 09, 2007, 07:50:09 AM »
I just got a Dynomax muffler welded on that I've been sitting on since the fall. My initial impression is that it sounds significantly deeper then the Bosal OEM equivalent muffler I had on previously. My problem with the Bosal was the rattly baffles led to a tinny sound that was a bit louder then I was comfortable with.

At city speeds the Dynomax is perfect much deeper and confident sounding then stock, at highway speeds it drones a bit more then I would like, I suspect I will get use to it as its really not that loud. Overall I think its well worth the money, the OEM exhaust sounded like a cheap Honda exhaust which I never felt comfortable with.

Electrical / Tach needle sticking
« on: April 01, 2007, 05:00:52 PM »
Over the past couple weeks the needle on the tach has started to stick. It has gotten progressivly worse and now almost always jumps up and down and often gets stuck in a position. What is the fix for this?
