Thanks Recordgold. I will try that.

Randyb, You said that you changed the OBD2 engine over to OBD1. Can you elaborate? Is it all about swapping easy to get to parts from the old engine or more complicated? Thanks.

Thought I'd dredge up this topic. If the OBD1 engine ('95) is available for parts, is there a way to transfer necessary parts such as intake, cam and crank sensors, over to the OBD2 ('98) engine and turn it into an OBD1 engine? Or is it more complicated than that?

Electrical / Re: Speedometer Troubleshooting
« on: August 01, 2016, 11:58:26 PM »
Great news: the odometer "rebuild" worked on my 528. Works perfectly. My speedometer is working consistently as well. I think having it sit for six months in the driveway caused the speedometer to be unreliable for the first couple of days. (The reason it sat in the driveway for six months was that I couldn't get it started due to a bad On Board Computer relay. That was a hard one to figure out.)

I see that this is an old post but people are still viewing it so: The odometers are notorious for having certain drive gears deteriorate. You can buy replacement gears from "garagistic". It takes a bit of finesse to replace them but you can find DIYs if you need help. I'm not sure if replacing those gears will help the speedometer. My speedometer kind of works when it wants to. On the E30s, there are a couple of rechargeable batteries that go bad and corrode the circuit board. Those can be replaced if you know how to solder. I replaced three odometer gears on my BMW 528E two days ago buy haven't driven the car yet to verify that it will hold.

There's a lot of satisfaction in figuring things out using your own brain and perseverance. Good job.

Electrical / '91 BMW 318 injectors won't open
« on: July 28, 2016, 12:07:35 PM »
I've been working on this car off and on for a couple of months. Brief history: The owner is a mechanic who replaced the engine with one from a wrecked 318, '90 or '91. I repaired the fuel pump, cleaned the ground strap ends and tightened them, tried a couple of AFMs and ECUs that I had (used), replaced the cam and crank sensors with used. I have changed the plugs and sprayed starting fluid into the intake boot and only got sporadic popping and sometimes blowing off the vacuum hoses. The best results came from pouring small amounts of gasoline into the spark plug ports and re-installing them. Car only ran for a few seconds though. I've jumpered the main and fuel relays and even isolated the two injector wires leading to the DME so that I could manually ground them. Still won't start. I have spark and fuel but the injectors apparently are not opening. I've also done a compression test dry and wet, with very good readings. My guess is that the car needs both cam and crank sensors (NEW). Is there anything I could be overlooking, like an obscure relay or temperature switch that can shut down the injectors if bad? Thanks.
