Righto cheers, will replace ASAP.

The sound remains when the car is warm. If it was to remain what would it be out of curiosity?

Engine + Driveline / M42 Sounds Like a Tractor

Why does my M42 sound like a tractor?

I recently pulled the M40 out of my E30 318i to swap in an M42 from an e36. The M42 was sitting around in my shed for about a year before installing it into the 318is. I am also unsure on the age/condition of the chain tensioner so that could be the problem but I'm still not sure. The engine runs on an E30 loom/ecu and I'm still using an e36 intake with the DISA valve fixed open, not that it should make a difference to the noise its making (from my knowledge). I can't pinpoint where the noise is coming from but it has to be from the head somewhere.

Below is the link to a short video of the motor running. Please excuse the stupid blue breather hose and incomplete COP.

Thanks in advance.

Ahh okay will do, thanks!

I have the e30 ECU and the e36 Manifold, just bypassing and disregarding the existence of the DISA valve. Engine thankfully does not have EWS.

Why do you ask?

Electrical / M42 conversion
« on: June 16, 2016, 12:58:13 AM »
Hi there,

Im planning to convert my e30 Coupe 318i (M40) to an m42 engine. I currently have most of the ancillaries required Inc M42 motor, E30 M42 Engine harness etc. However I only have an E36 M42 Coil pack.

Is it possible to run this engine with this loom on the E36 coil pack, and If so how would I go about connecting it to the loom as the E36 Coil pack has 5 pins whereas the E30 Coil pack has 5 separate leads?
Kind Regards,

Cooper

Engine + Driveline / M42 exhaust manifold

Hi all,

I recently bought an m42 dirt cheap that I hope to drop into my m40 powered e30. I've been looking at the exhaust manifold and I can't seem to find any pictures online that remotely resemble it.

I'm just wondering if I'm blind and don't realise that this is stock, or if its a frankenstein butcher from the e30/e36 manifolds.

looks like 2 and 3 are from an e30 where as 1 and 4 are from an e36.  Can someone please help?

Thanks heaps in advance !
