For Sale / Parting out M44 engine from 1997 318i
« on: June 06, 2010, 07:12:59 PM »
I'm about to get rid of all these parts, so let me know if you need anything. Make me an offer that's worth me sending it to you. I hate to throw away M44 parts, but I have no need for them. I will sell cheap, so just make an offer. I also have a few parts not listed here, so just ask if you need something.

Just updated the parts available, and still have some others not listed here. Just ask if you need something not listed, and make an offer on any parts.

Engine + Driveline / Car not running correctly after cylinder head rebuild
« on: September 01, 2009, 08:32:30 AM »
When I had the head machined (it was warped) the machinist also pressure tested it. He said it had no cracks and it was trued after the machining. I really hope it's not that....

After a coolant fitting failure on my 1997 318i (M44) I had the warped head machined and my friends and I reassembled the engine from head gasket up. The car runs, but not well. The engine runs roughly and tends to stall when at idle speed. Today I put a fresh battery in the car (from my 328is) and it started. I drove it for 5 minutes, not letting the RPMs drop below 1,000. There was lots of white smoke at lower RPMs but not really any above about 2,500. The temperature stayed where it belonged with the needle pointing to 12 o'clock. After driving it for 5 minutes, I came to a stop sign and let the car idle, when it stalled. It wouldn't start after that. We checked the alternator by removing the negative battery cable when the car was running, and the car still ran, so the alternator seems fine. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks!

Engine management / 318i 1997 won't start
« on: June 26, 2009, 11:08:05 AM »
DesktopDave,

Thanks for the information. We tested all three above. Numbers 1 & 2 were fine, but we found that the crank position sensor seemed to have low resistance. We replaced it. Here is the latest, I posted it to 318ti.org: http://www.318ti.org/forum/showthread.php?t=27191

Engine management / 318i 1997 won't start
« on: June 23, 2009, 07:46:15 PM »
I'm also having trouble with my car, a 1997 318i with M44 engine. I was driving today on the highway when it broke down. For several miles I heard a tapping noise that seemed to be coming from the vent, but eventually I realized it was getting worse, and when I accellerated it was tapping and when I wasn't on the accellerator it wasn't tapping. I pulled to the shoulder and the engine stopped and smoke came from the engine. The car wouldn't start again. The oil level is good, there are no oil leaks, no holes in the engine block, and nothing looks wrong, it just won't start. The battery still has power and the starter will spin, the engine just won't turn over. After cranking the starter for a few seconds an odd odor apperars, sometimes it smells like gas. I'll check these suggestions for sure. Any other suggestions? Thanks!
