Exterior / Found Rust In Rear, Under Battery Tray...Fix-It Tips?

I just went through the same issue on mine.  Seems that there is a little pocket where the tow hook is that traps water.  Over time the water seeps through two panels (rear valence and battery box) which then rots from the inside out.  I spent a couple of days trying to figure out the best way to prevent this from happening again.  
So what I came up with is to cut out said pocket and weld in a new patch panel that deletes the "pocket", seams seal and under coat.  




I have not taken pics since I finished it up but I will take some pics and post em tomorrow.

Off-topic discussion / Intro

Been lurking for quite some time, digging up info, pics, etc.  I have a 91 318is alpine white, non sun roof that is at best fair shape.  In the very near future the motor will be pulled for a fresher m42, body resprayed, and the other fiddlings to make it nice.  Not full resto or anything just a fresh up.
Also have a 91 318is sunroof car.  Red and dead.  This is the project car.  S50 swap, full respray, completely redo interior, cage, all new suspension and bushings.  It is kind of on the back burner until I get the white one squared away.
Been into VW's for years and after a lady totaled my 91 GLI I FINALLY made the swap to BMW.  Worked in a BMW shop when I was in college and said at some point I would own one one day and the destruction of my GLI just pushed me over the edge.
2 day after I bought the white one.  Had stock suspension when I bought it.
