Be prepared for a whopping zero increase in hp and about 3 trillion db's of annoyence added.

Not your 93.
Only build dates of 1/1995 and later.

^Good point.
I check my temp guage constantly though, impossible for me to forget as my peripheral vision would catch the temp rise.  Living in Hawaii, where it's 85 everyday I tend to pay attention to the guage more than most.

Engine + Driveline / Bad O2 sensor symptoms??

Pulled out the cam sensor and there was fresh motor oil on it. Not a lot but enough for me to ask if its normal. I tested the sensor on the side with 3 prongs and it came very close to 1250 ohms (tested between prong one and two). I think this is the correct test procedure, but at this point i don't know. I'm getting a 1244 but the cam sensor seems fine.:confused::confused:

If you have an M42 (like we all do), chances are the passenger (right) side of the timing case leaks...which, in turn gets the CPS wet with oil.  Ask me how I know.

And to reiterate what Dave mentioned above, I tested faulty AFM with the stomp test when I indeed had a loose vacuum hose.  So not always 100% accurate.

What about just wiring it to a in cabin on/off switch?  How hard would it be to just flip the switch when you see the temp hit halfway?  I'd *much* prefer this so I have total control.  Besides, it would give me something to do. ;)

Bump.
I have the same problem (have had it with all (4) of my E30/E36 M42's where I have removed the A/C compressor and bracket).

In my case, the vertical gaskets on both sides of the upper and lower timing case covers are original.  The problem doesn't seem to be on the drivers (left) side, but the A/C compressor side, (passenger, right).  As mentioned a few posts above (Post 8), if you plan on removing your A/C compressor *bracket*, you WILL need to get new shorter bolts for the (2) front holes where the A/C compressor bracket mounts.  It is a fact that said bracket does indeed seal that area (although it still "seeps" with it on).

Anyways, for now, I am going to get the (2) shorter bolts at Home Depot, and clean the area with brake cleaner, and put a sealant bead on the outside (I know this isn't ideal, but if it minimizes it, I will be happy).

Justin, who replaced the Timing case horizontal gasket, valver cover gasket, upper and lower oil pan gaskets, and oil filter housing gaskets and STILL has a leak....sigh. :(

poor gas mileage.
poor performance.
just buy a new one, can't hurt.

Engine + Driveline / problem running after alt/fan belt broke

check your vacuum hoses and AFM.  Might have been shimmied when replacing the belt? (I know it sounds random but it's worth a check).

General Topics / Why do people give the M42 engine a hard time?
« on: June 01, 2009, 01:48:48 AM »
I have owned (4) M42 cars (2 91 318is models, and 2 95 318 models, E36).
The M42 is painfully reliable and insanely robust.

My first BMW when I was 20 was the 95 318is.  I drove it like a typical 20 yr old and would *sit* at redline of 7000+ for a good amount of time before shifting to the next gear...just to beat on er a bit. (had the Conforti chip to help that high revvin capability!) ;)

Overall, they are just awesome little motors.  And I currently have the best iteration, 4.10LSD, E30 body, MarkD chip, 2500lbs.  Car flat out moves nicely.

Thanks Dave, it is a work in progress!

So I did a little researching/trial and error and took off the A/C compressor bracket.  I then proceeded to clean that entire passenger side of the engine where it was damp of oil.  I let the car sit for an hour...came back and still bone dry (weird hmm).  I then started it up, let it warmup to operating temp, revved it a bit to get the oil flowing AND....still no leaking.  I am letting it sit overnight and will check the garage floor in the a.m.  I am thinking maybe a 6" long bead of gasket sealer or something like that to keep the "behind the A/C comp bracket oil leak" in check.  You guys have any luck with sealing from the outside?

In other news, that area I circled above in red (the upper oil pan gasket) area was only wet because the vertical seal above was leaking down onto it (or so it seems and I am hoping after paying good money to get that dang thing replaced!)

+1.  Looks quite good.

My 318is has an oil leak.

It has new:
-Valve cover gasket, spark plug gaskets
-timing cover gasket (or whatever it's called parallel to the VCG, and next to the oil filter housing in the below photo)
-Oil filter hosing seals/gaskets

^Pic shows new gaskets in valve cover, and the one below that, also shows a bit of the cleaned up, new sealed oil filter housing.
-Upper/Lower oil pan gaskets

^Shows new upper/lower pan gaskets.
And I *still* have a minor leak on the passenger (right) side near the A/C compressor.

I just had a local quality BMW shop do the upper/lower pan gaskets, fixing 95% of the leak.  They cleaned up the pans and put the new gaskets in, so it is easy to see where the new leak is coming from.

In the below photos, you can see a bit of seepage (and I had just wiped it clean 5 min prior to these photos) right behind the A/C compressor bracket.  The A/C is deleted, and while I'd love to take the compressor bracket off, it leaks a lot if I do so.  (and drips off the crank position sensor).  Have you guys deleted the A/C and the compressor bracket?  If so, does that vertical seal leak?

^Two problem areas circled in red.
My main question is....is there a gasket behind that vertical seal?  I guess it would be called the timing case front seal???

Also I circled (in red above) a spot where it appears the newly replaced upper oil pan gasket is seeping.  Have any of you had problems with a persistant upper pan gasket leak even after replacing it with a new one?

Any help is appreciated.

Engine + Driveline / Motor Mount Options?

For $15 each, I'll stick with the OE 535 mounts.  They are great so far.
