excuse my ignorance, but are e36 m42 throttle bodies bigger than an e30 one. and will they fit straight on?

Engine + Driveline / manifold cracked
« on: August 07, 2010, 12:17:02 PM »
yeah thats right! i can hear it more on start up on a cold morning, really annoying ticking noise. i can alos feel it if i get my hand around the individual pipes.
luckily i have already had the 4 bolts between the cat and manifold off when i did my clutch about 6 months ago. i put them back with plenty of copper slip so im hoping that they will just unbolt nice and easily. im thinking i might wrap the pipes once its all welded up aswell. might help a little?

yeah you are right about the transmission hanger. when i bought the car i noticed that there was a remenence of something to do with the exhaust. the problem with living in england is they use so much salt on the roads in winter time that  steel exhaust components rust really badly. i am a porsche technician and the exhausts on them suffer massively because of this.
good news about the bolts and studs!
thanks for the reply fella!

Engine + Driveline / manifold cracked
« on: August 05, 2010, 02:11:08 PM »
hi!
just wondering if many m42 owners have had their exhaust header crack between the flanges and the pipe. mine seems to have cracks on 3 of the pipes.
im getting an exhaust made up for the car next week and thought that whilst its apart i was going to weld it all up again. but this involves unbolting the header off the head. im just a bit worried that bolts might start snapping off due to corrosion ect, or are these normally ok as long as i use plenty of penetrating oil?

As i am now redundant i have loads of free time so i went to the scrappy to buy some coil packs with the intention of doing the COP conversion.
this morning i went to my old work and used the mill and made the COP plate to mount to the cam cover. After about an hour or so of dicking around i made the plate and fitted the coils packs to the plate and then fitted them to the cam cover. i have now driven the car about 100 miles and i can definitely notice a small improvement in throttle response and it does seem to pull a little bit better. All in all well worth the effort and it looks the bollocks!

unfortunately i dont have the money to supercharge the engine and even if i did, i use the car as a daily runner for now and therefore need it to do my daily stuff.

i noticed when i was fitting the engine to the car that the throttle body did not open all the way on WOT. so im going back to the scrappy to get another one so that i can have a fiddle with it and try to get it to open properly.

i am also going to get rid of the 2" cold air feed and try to get something bigger. ie ram air or something. i saw one of the american guys here took the high beam light out completely and raid a cooking shop for a siv and made a pretty cool looking air intake.

a custom exhaust is also on my list of things to do.. from what i can see the manifold looks about as good as it can get. i would love to make a full 2 pipe system, i just dont know how il get around the lambda sensor issue... anyone ever tried to do this?

and then finally i am going to make myself a custom intake manifold and use some motorbike throttle bodies. i will of course for this be using a stand alone ecu as im not sure if i encorporated the original AFM to the custom plenum chamber it would be up to the job.... anyone ever done throttle bodies with standard AFM????

for now i think that should keep me busy for the next few weeks. hopefully by then i will be back doing what i know best...... working with racing cars and not oily dirty road cars LOL

i have been registered on this forum for a couple of months but never really said hello.
I will be representing the uk m42 owners. i have a 1994 schwartz metallic touring with m42 engine transplant. the engine is superb and i have read loads of very interesting and useful threads on modifying and maintenance.
looking forward to reading more useful stuff

cheers
