Looking for the BEST write up on changing my head gasket and any other work that would be best done at the same time.

Thank You in advance for your help and time.

Sorry to say it, but the body is a 4 door, and it's got some battle wounds so it's not the prettiest thing in the world.

I'll get some pics up soon so you guys can get a general idea of what shape everything's in.

I hate to see it come to this, but I think my trusty E30 has finally bitten the bullet. Luckily, I'll be moving out and won't need a car for a while, so I think I am going to part it out. Before I start tearing it to pieces, I'd like to get an idea of whether or not anybody would be interested, so if you have a need for anything, let me know! If I get enough responses I'll probably get started pretty soon.

Engine management / Oxygen sensor replacement
« on: March 15, 2010, 08:33:40 PM »
UPDATE (Just in case anyone cares): Got the car running again, turns out it wasn't actually getting fuel. Bad fuel pump connection. I reseated the wires and everything seems okay on that front.

More importantly, the new O2 sensor fixed all of my problems! I had a really funky idle (sometimes it'd be near-stall low, and sometimes it would be up at 1500), stuttering/hesitation on acceleration, and loss of power all over the rev range, as well as a 1244 CEL code that would go on and off as I drove around. Since installing the new sensor, all of that's gone, including the CEL, which was starting to worry me. All fixed for around $45.

I hope this helps someone else who might be having the same problem as me.

^^^ That's what I figured, but I didn't mess with anything else so I don't know what could possibly have gone wrong.

Engine management / Oxygen sensor replacement

So I installed the new sensor, and everything went pretty smoothly up until I went to start the car. It started, sputtered out, and died. Now it won't start. It cranks, and it's getting fuel. Anyone know what could be wrong?

Ahh, that makes much more sense. I was starting to worry a bit, haha. I should be getting the new sensor in a day or two, maybe I'll do a little write up with pics if anyone's interested?

You said you hae a 3 wire yet you ordered a Mustang 4 wire?

That thread on Bimmerforums mentioned something about E30s having 3-wire sensors, so I was a bit confused. A bunch of other things said that E30s are four-wire and that the mustang sensor will work fine, and since I could pick one of those up on Ebay for like $40, I went with that.

Awesome, thanks for the help guys. Just ordered a Mustang O2 sensor (Ford part # 5C5Z9F472AA if anyone needs it) from Ebay.

So, from what I'm getting out of that thread so far, I'm going to need a 3 wire Bosch universal sensor, which I can just splice in to the old connector?

I'm going to have to replace my O2 sensor pretty soon, but I'm trying to avoid spending $100+ on an OE one. I read about replacing it with generic Bosch units, but I can't find any specifics besides that PDF detailing how to splice the wires. Does anyone know where exactly I can find one of these kits, and what exactly I should be buying? Thanks!

Engine + Driveline / M42 idle issue and gunk in the intake
« on: January 29, 2010, 07:17:46 PM »
As far as I can tell, all of the vacuum lines are fine. I did the mess under the intake hose delete a while back, and replaced everything I could. I'm pretty sure it's something related to a sensor somewhere, because the problem really only occurs at certain engine temps. I was thinking about cutting off my cat, since I don't have emissions to worry about where I live, and I have a feeling that the problem has something to do with it for some reason.

Yup, I tried that. No improvement, unfortunately. The wire was where it was supposed to be for a US Cat car.

Bringing this thread back to life, because I have a similar problem. My car seems to run fine starting cold (like, sitting all night in 10* weather cold), but it starts to run like crap as it gets up to operating temp. It misses and bleeds off power under constant throttle, and idles really low. Once it's at operating temp, it runs fine except for a lumpy idle.

Any updates OP? I've ordered a coolant temp sensor, but it'd be cool to see if you figured out a fix.

Engine + Driveline / Did we ever figure out the "Hot Start Problem"

Systema - ICV perhaps? Ever changed or checked your plugs/wires? Any other symptoms you can narrow down?

New plugs, not sure about the wires but they look pretty new. The old plugs were pretty carbon-y, and I know the car's running kinda rich. I can't tell for sure, but it smells like there's gas in the oil. That's probably a bad sign, huh?
