Engine + Driveline / need some feedback and some suggestions.
« on: June 01, 2011, 10:19:33 PM »
Your wheels are corroded onto the hub.  Soak them with penetrating grease and wail on them with something big to get 'em off. The big nut is definitely not what is holding them on there.

Hate to say it, but cars with that much visible rust are pretty questionable as any kind of long term possession.

General Topics / how many would go to FSP scca
« on: June 24, 2010, 03:41:06 PM »
Sounds great, competition would still be tough with the VWs that are usually running around.  I had to drive the snot out of my old ti to come in mid-pack in DSP.

Off-topic discussion / What was your first car?
« on: June 24, 2010, 03:31:57 PM »
'82 Porsche 924.  I still want to track down that car.  About as fast as a golf but fun and great for picking up chicks in high school.  I was in waaay over my head as far as maintenance was concerned.

miles on the transmission?

Should be about ~200k.  PO bought it as a spare and gave it to me with the car, so I'm not totally sure of it's history.

Will consider trades.

I also have this box of random differential parts.  Medium case and small case parts.  Pinion gears, ring gears, bearings, cases, LSD units, output and input flanges...anything you can think of.  If you need something you think I have in this pile, let me know.

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / M42 to M20 Swap

what kind of power gains are we talking about when just throwing in a 373?

None.

And, the m20 is actually a ton simpler.  Other than the t-belts and occasional rocker arms they're pretty much bulletproof.  No loose oil pan nuts, weird timing gear, profile gaskets, vacuum hose nightmares, etc...   My m20 has 277k on it and doesn't skip a beat.

That having been said, I still enjoy driving my m42 car a bunch more than my m20 car, and the work I've had to do to it is pretty minimal.

It's not quite THAT complicated, but still not really worth the work when you're not gaining a lot.  m50 would make a lot more sense.

I have an m42 and an m20iX car.  I swear the 318 is faster sometimes, and a lot more fun to drive.  (granted a 4x4 6 cyl e30 is a ton heavier than 2wd 4 cyl car.)  I do know the 318 gets about another 10mpg also.

but i was reading thu a few threads n there sayin stay away from copeys on e.bay so iv asked markB if he has any that would fit the m44 e36 , hopefully he will have something for me ...

m44's are '96 on, and are thus OBDII.  No chips for them.  I'm not sure if there was ever any kind of "shark" available similar to what turner was doing for the m52's and such.  I have a feeling you may be out of luck.

Engine + Driveline / What is the best factory inlet manifold?

Both manifolds fit under e30 hood, but the e30 manifold is WAY better...

I'm going to have to agree here.  Having owned both a '95 318ti (m42) and now '91 318is, I can say the dual length intake runner manifold on the e36 is just sort of gimmicky.

I guess it helps out the low end *somewhat* but there's not that much there regardless.  Other than making a neat noise when it switches to the short runner it's really just a doodad.
