I think a lot of people will note the lack of knock sensors when appling forced induction on an M42.  With proper tuning, it shouldn't be a problem.

I would suggest to lower the compression ratio since the M42's are a tad high and you would need some pretty good fuel (not really feasable here in CA).

Engine + Driveline / How do I remove the camshafts?
« on: September 05, 2006, 11:16:02 PM »
Your best bet is to remove them with the special BMW tools.  The tool will thread into 2 of the spark plug holes and then a lever arm will hold down all of the cam caps.  This allows you to undo all of the caps without the springs putting undistributed loads on the shaft.

If you cant get your hands on the BMW tool you can take a look at the write up on http://www.pelicanparts.com.

By undoing the caps on at a time you run the risk on bending or breaking the cam.  Alough, I know of people removing the cams without the tools without any problems.

Engine + Driveline / Removing the thermo-viscous fan

Oops sorry, I stole a pic from an M50.  They have a similar water pump setup.

I do however have this sitting in the garage:

Also, this would be a good place to recommend replacing the water pump if it is original.  The original impeller was made from plastic and it is not fun replacing it when it explodes.  Hell, even the metal flange on that bolts to the timing case broke off when I started removing it.

Your fan shouldnt be attached to the crank nut.  It is attached to the water pump.  Therefore, putting the car in gear wont stop it from turning.

I used channel locks to remove my fan.  To hold the pulley still I used a long screw driver wedged between the nuts.

Fits great.  Does not interfere with the drive shaft.  I have heard the the 3.0L Z4 might cause some rubbing problems.  Some have to bend the selector rod.

Thanks, I think calypso photographs well.

Glad to see you on this board Aaron.  How's the progress on the 'power increase'??

Hey Mark.  It is looking like an eninge more and more.  You need to stop by.  I have all day tomorrow off, maybe we can hook up.

Here is a shot of the interior (detailed it yesterday):

And I just thought this looked cool:

M42 Buyer's Guide / Attention E30 Drop top owners...
« on: August 25, 2006, 08:27:17 AM »
Never had a problem.  The original top didn't leak, the new top doesn't leak and the hard top doesn't leak.  If the seal is bad however, you will probably be getting water in the cabin.

Since your budget is in the $4k range, you should be able to pick up a pretty good cabby that is taken care of.
