Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / Re: m44/m42 spec rally engine
« on: November 16, 2015, 11:59:22 PM »
Hey Sion,

i forgot to mention, i'm even not allowed to raise the ccm, so i MUST stay at 1800ccm.
Our Rally regulations are a bit shitty.

So i try to make the best of it. As we all know 1800ccm will never be a torque-monster... :-)
Thats why i'm trying to find someone who has experince in a 1800ccm powerbuild.

Thanks
David

Hey guys,
i just read the complete threat and i´m fighting around with the same problem, i just building an M42 rally engine.
Setup so long:

M42 Head:
CNC machined and ported head, CNC machined combustion chambers, flowbench test, multi angle valve seat ring cut, new conical valve guides for 6mm valves, aso... (all done by NG Motorsport Germany)

Valves:
Supertech Inconel Valves, +1mm inlet and outlet,

Camshafts:
Catcams 1301520 Kit (298/290) including Follower, Lash Caps, upper and lower retainers & suitable uprated Springs (no more hydraulic lifters)

Pistons:
CP Forged Pistons, 11:1 Ratio

I'm not really sure if i should put all together in this configuration!? What do you think?
Crankshaft and Flywheel will be lightened and balanced for sure, even forged I or H Beam Conrods will be used.
But i'm struggeling with my head config.....
I have to mention that i'm not allowed (rally regulations) to use an ITB, for sure it will get an DTA ECU and will run on AlphaN.

Goal is an engine with an big usable rpm range, starting somewhere around 5000 till 8000rpm´s

Please help me and let me hear your ideas and proposals!

David

Engine + Driveline / INSANE M42 Engine Problem
« on: May 27, 2015, 03:35:37 AM »
I dont know what to do anymore!
PLEASE HELP ME

Problem:
My M42 had some engine issues, it wont idle after starting it up when engine is warm - but i think i solved this problem.
BUT it smoked white after coldstart in the morning and needed some water... It starts not proberly, the starter can not be cranked, i need to try it 2- 3 times, after it starts it runs on 3 cylinders.
We thougt, okay - headgasket

We renewed: head gasket, head bolts, thermostat gasket, all gaskets from cylinder head, all liquids, aso...

Problem NOW:
It smokes white after coldstart in the morning and has all the problems like before, will not start, runs on 3 cylinders aso.... !!!  :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

BUT (and now it comes)
It smokes just if it stands horizontal or uphill (in direction of travel)
If it stands downhill in direction of travel IT STARTS PERFECT, RUNS PERFECT, NO SMOKE

COULD SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!!!!! I´M GOING MAD!

Engine + Driveline / What do you think about this Set-Up

Hy guys,

i´m new here but not new to M42.
Had several E30 M42´s but now i´m going serious with my E30 318is Rally Car build.

My actual Topic is the Engine and i want to know or ask some of you engine specialists about your oppinion (sorry for my bad spelling)

Goal:
M42 Engine, up to 2000ccm, Output at least 200hp, about 8000rpm maybe higher, reliable (as one could talk about reliable in a race car :-) )

Thougts:

Std Engine: Stroke 81mm, 84mm Piston with 31,65 compression height and 380grams, 140mm rod

Option1: M44 Crank Stroke 83,5mm, Special Made Piston i actual have here 84mm with 27,4mm compression heigth and 291grams, 140mm rod
same capacity 1800ccm BUT about 1656grams weigth saving, have to remove about 2,7mm block deck heigth

Option2: M47 Crank (built to fit) Stroke 88mm. Special Made Piston i actual have here 84mm with 27,4mm compression heigt and 291grams, 140mm rod, Capacity 1950,7ccm
BUT about 1744grams weigth gain because of the heavier M47 crank (both cranks m44 and m47 would be machined and lightend)

Rest of the Setup will be Dbilas Racing ITB Kit, Cat Cams 302° camshaft kit including springs and all of the other head stuff...
Head gets milled and polished, maybe 6mm valves...

To see the Pistons go to Facebook and search "Project E30"

Tell me what you think!

Nice to be here!
