Engine + Driveline / White Smoke from Tail Pipe
« on: September 04, 2012, 12:49:52 PM »
Thanks Geoff.

My compression numbers look decent.  The first two are more than 10% lower than the other two.  Does this give anyone an idea if the crack is in the first two cylinders, or could it just be wear associated?

EDIT: Forgot to mention there is a very loud clicking sound when the car was running on my way home when I saw the white smoke.

Engine + Driveline / White Smoke from Tail Pipe
« on: September 04, 2012, 12:21:23 AM »
About two weeks ago my car overheated due to a broken altenator/power steering belt I didn't notice on the interstate.  Wasn't buried in the red, but pretty close.  I replaced the belt then drove for two weeks and not one issue, I drive 70 miles a day all interstate.  Friday i notice a serious lag in power from 1000 - 2500 rpm and significant amounts of white smoke in my rear view mirror.  I suspect head gasket, cracked head, etc.  I performed a compression test, throttle not down:

1 - 185 psi
2 - 185 psi
3 - 210 psi
4 - 210 psi

My question is why did it take 2 weeks for white smoke to come out of my tailpipe?  Is the over heating not my problem?  Or do I just need to pull the head and let somone tell me whats wrong with it?

Thanks ahead, love this forum I always reference here.

The PO of my car had the system charged with r134a at a shop and I have the receipt.  It was not very expensive, I'd quote but the receipt is at home.  If I remember correctly it was less than $100 bucks. So obviously they did not comb over it and I have no problems.

Have you checked your mileage driven by GPS instead of using your trip odometer?  Maybe yours is turning over slower than it ought to.  I know this happens because mine was turning over 1 mile for every 4 or 5 driven.  I am not saying yours is this bad, but worth checking your calcs.

Engine + Driveline / Never-ending idle/rough start problems :(

I would go over the hoses they replaced and make sure the connections are tight.  Then if you don't find anything take it back in.

General Topics / How easily should my wheels turn?

Is your car in Neutral?  Probably is, but if it was in gear it would be pretty hard to turn those wheels.

Engine + Driveline / Noisy Valve Train, Timing, and Sudden Death ?'s

I already started tearing back into everything to adjust the sprockets, fix the AC, and fix a leak.

If the sound does away I will let you know, but I doubt this is the problem.

Thanks for the info.  I actually have used that writeup to replace my timing guides.  Thats when I put the sprockets back on incorrectly because the chain did not have any marks (must be aftermarket by PO).

What I really want to know is whether or not having the sprockets "off" would make my car noisy.  It actually runs well, but the valve train is annoyingly noisy.  Might as well have marbles in there.

I am talking about the actual sprocket.  The arrow does not point up at TDC.  However the cam shafts are square.

For example take a car with perfect timing, remove the exhaust cam sprocket only, do nothing else, then re-install the sprocket but turn it 90 degrees before you install it.  So your timing on your chain is not off, but the knob on the sprocket is off.

The timing is not off, just the sprocket is not lined up right.  Meaning I took my sprockets off and put them back a couple of teeth off.  The chain did not move.So no my pistons are no slamming into my valves on my 35 mile trip to work everyday.

I was trying to find out if I am right in assuming the CPS is telling fuel to go into my cylinders too soon or too late because the cam sprocket is not in the correct position.

Unless I am way off and my motor is going to grenade itself now that I have written this.

I think just a couple teeth.  I will get in there and take a look sometime this week.

Sorry for the delay I left work and left for the weekend.

Three Questions:

1.)  If the cam sprocket(s) were not put directly back in the same position as when they came out what effect will this have on the Cam Position Sensor and how your car runs?  My timing is dead on from what I can tell, but the arrows on the sprockets do not point straight up at TDC.  Since there is that knob that the CPS reads what affect will this cause?

2.)  Could 1. make my valve train noisy?  If not is there some parts I should replace or something.  I have tight screws in my oil pan and I already replaced the timing guides.  Any other ideas?

3.)  If I don't let my car warm up for a few minutes before I take off on the first start of the day it dies at the first stop sign I hit.  And it dies very gracefully just as I push the clutch in coming to a stop, no jerking, no sounds, just silent death.  Then it starts right back up after I turn the key.  Any Ideas?

Engine + Driveline / HELP!!! Engine Noise
« on: December 17, 2009, 01:27:34 PM »
I'm at work so I can't listen to your video.  But my car made a good amount of racket when Part 6 the timing chain rail broke apart.  It broke into several pieces.  The way I found out was I took the valve cover off and fished around with a magnetic rod trying to find loose pieces.  I pulled out a washer, the top of the guide rail, and the sleeve for part 9 in the drawing posted above.  I actually drove another few thousand miles before I ripped the case apart and replaced all the parts.  But if I hadn't fished the parts out I did I would never have made it.
