Engine + Driveline / U-joints...
« on: May 24, 2010, 02:49:23 PM »
So, I've been told that because of how the U joints are fit onto the driveshaft that it's more efficient to just blow money on a new driveshaft instead of replacing them. I was told that they're compression fit and you can't just remove them and throw on new ones. I really don't want to spend that much money on something that I could potentially fix for much cheaper...

What do you guys advise?

Welcome to M42club. Yeah, I'm a bit late, I know.
I'm in Lexington too... I'm just a kid and know very little, but you should give me a holler if you want. There aren't very many E30 M42 owners here.

Yes, it's on ebay. Yes, it's beautiful.
I'm pretty sure these cars didn't come in Imola red from the factory, though...

The car isn't mine, I'm just sharing...

Engine + Driveline / Shaking in driveshaft.

That's most likely it seeing as I have symptoms completely identical to other people that didn't preload their CSBs. Thanks again.

I wasn't even aware that had to be done.
This is my first car...
Ehhh...
I'll check that out tomorrow. Thanks.

Engine + Driveline / Shaking in driveshaft.
« on: March 17, 2010, 05:05:38 PM »
Well, when in first gear, my driveshaft shakes quite a bit, depending on how hard I'm accelerating. It only shakes from 2k-3k RPM. I recently replaced my center support bearing.
I'm thinking it could be my thrust bearing...
But, I'm hoping that's not true because this is my daily driver, and I really don't have much time for a rebuild right now. Any suggestions?

General Topics / e30 318is dilema
« on: February 16, 2010, 02:32:52 AM »
I'm from KY, and my '91 318iS may be up for sale in a year or two. xD

I don't know where to look either. A friend of mine owns a shop, and one of his customers was selling my car. Unfortunately, my car came from New Hampshire, and the guy I actually bought it from didn't have it very long.
If you know anybody that works on lots of BMWs, ask if any of their customers are selling one. I've never seen another E30 318iS here in Lexington.
Good luck!

General Topics / Randomly engaging e-brake caused problems...
« on: December 03, 2009, 06:26:49 PM »
I bent my wheel back most of the the way... The old towel and lumber trick... :D
Thanks though. xD

The brake shields are pretty thin metal, and I'm thinking I might try to nibble through them at the point of thinnest radius, and then try bending them around.

Now I'm just wondering if it is possible to only buy the glass piece for a fog light? Mine cracked... But the rest of it is fine...

And I'll also start looking for new passenger side front panel, a new hood, a new bumper, and such. =.=

General Topics / Randomly engaging e-brake caused problems...
« on: December 03, 2009, 05:06:31 PM »
Driving home from school on a rainy day, the e-brake engaged while I was moving at a moderately low speed, and I curbed my car, also hitting a bush. The front valence is bent, mostly on the right side, and slight warps in metal continue all the way up to above the wheel well. The hood is also slightly bent, and so is my wheel. =.=
Firstly, what would cause my e-brake to gradually destroy itself? It began as only slight engagement, and the level of engagement increased over time. I thought I had fixed this problem by messing with the cables, but I obviously hadn't, although the symptom never occurred until the incident. The interesting thing is that the components on both sides were broken. After inspecting my e-brakes, I found that the springs holding the shoes in place has been shredded on both sides. How exactly would that cause the e-brake to engage? I proceeded to remove my brake shoes, and all necessary components.
Or so I had thought. The hinges were left in place, because my father told me that they'd be fine, and they both ended up being sucked into my rotors, lodged between rotor and brake shield. Are there any techniques of replacing shields that require smaller amounts of disassembly? I have a metal nibbler, and other pneumatic tools...

Engine + Driveline / Pops out of first gear
« on: May 19, 2009, 12:12:13 PM »
I'm guessing you mean that it begins to catch, enough that you begin to move, but when engine load reaches a certain point it gives way unless fully engaged...
Or do you have to engage while already in motion in order to avoid popping out of gear?
You could need new synchronizer rings, a new operating sleeve, and it's possible that your first gear dog teeth could be worn out...

Is your transmission re manufactured? It's possible that it could have been been improperly assembled...
You could just need to replace some worn bearings...

Any notable noises?
Does this happen every time you accelerate?
It could be a thrust clearance problem due to gears not fully contacting one another. If that's the case a rebuild would be necessary.

Honestly, I'm no expert; I'm just giving suggestions, but I don't really know if they are tips specific to the transmission of the M42. =]

So, I have to ask...
How did you get that head unit in?
I believe I have the same one...
Doesn't it have an RCA plug (I really have no idea whatsoever)....
The E30 wiring harness (I'm a noob sorry if I use bad terminology) and the head unit aren't compatible...
Did you get some sort of converter... Or what?
o.O

Electrical / ECU Questions...
« on: March 03, 2009, 03:22:36 PM »
Yeah...
Well, I could do the soldering and such, but I have no EPROM reader... I have only the stock chip, so the dual switchable chip mod would be essential... I think having a backup would be important, no? I don't think I have a Torx screwdriver either. Ha. Do you absolutely HAVE to have one to access the EPROM?
I'd like to look into getting into the BIN files, and possibly make an attempt at reverse engineering and editing them... Or whatever will be on it? I'm wondering what I need in order to be able to do that... And where I would get it... I'd like to do this stuff on my own instead of paying someone else, even though it will take me hundreds of hours, and probably will not be as good. :D
The point is that I'd be able to custom tune it to my special needs...
And whatever else, for "free." Frustration, parts, and labor not included. :p

So I know what EPROM to order, and what other things to look for, but where do I find a 27C256 EPROM reader? o.O
