Engine management / Stalling/bogging down at idle
« on: December 17, 2008, 03:25:22 PM »
Thanks guys. Hopefully I can find an intake boot around here (Kansas City, MO). That's fairly simple to replace, eh? I'm an utter noob, but hope to do as much work myself since I'm in college and low on cash pretty much all the time :)

Also, am I going to make anything worse by driving it? It's working more or less fine right now, so I was planning on driving it around after work to see if anything changes for the better or worse and in what conditions.

Engine management / Stalling/bogging down at idle

Greetings all, this is my first post here:

It's been getting cold where I live, and my 1991 318iC has been starting a bit sluggishly but then runs just fine. Today however, I started her up and went inside for a few minutes to let it warm up, when I came out she was bogging down every couple of seconds (almost to a stall), and when I sat inside after a minute or two it died. I started it back up and put the gas on, as that seems to keep it running pretty well. I drove off to work and at every stop felt it bog down almost to a stall unless I kept the revs up (but with the revs up I felt something "odd"). The check engine light flipped on at one stoplight while I was waiting, but disappeared after I was accelerating. This continued even after the engine was warm, but now I just went out and everything seemed fine, only a very minor rev level drop. Any ideas? I see a very, VERY small crack around the rubber boot near the hose clamp, but that's all as far as intake issues. I have a cracked oil filter housing, so I see some oil below that that has leaked out, although I don't think that's a problem as my oil level is just fine.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
