Hi there.

i know there is not that much people in this forum as it used to be. anyway here is my build and i hope i will find some people able to help me out with my issues.

first things first, here is a non exhaustive list of the engine parts.

- M44 block with M44 crank

- E36 M42 head, ported, oversize valves and upgraded springs with titanium retainers and solid lifters

-Catcams 272° intake cam with and stock exhaust one (i actually have 290°/272° but afraid i will loose to much driveability at low RPM with this setup)

- Custom intake with 70mm throttle body

- piston wise i currently have standard euro S50B30 pistons , 12.5CR forged S50B30 pistons ordered waiting to be received.

- rods are M44, rebushed to 21mm

- main and rods bearing are ACL

-engine management is a KDATA ECU PNP on the M44 loom.

I did some measurement on the engine but by lack of experience i have a hard time interpreting the results.
crank main journals are all close to 59.98mm (some must be 59.978) so that should be corresponding to the Green bmw standars (between 59.977 and 59.983)

I did a test with plastigauge and found close to 0.10 bearing play (that should be divided by 2 to spread to each side of the journal) so 0.05

I also did measurement (becuse i wasn't sure about the plastigage thing) with what we call a "3 touchs" inner micrometer here in france with the bearings in place, torqued down to spec but without the crank obviously to be able to measure. i found close to 60.07 for 4 of the bearings and 60.09 for the one with the trust bearing.
(did the same with an old bearing and found 60.025)

so i get pretty close to the 0.1mm play, so oil film will be between 0.045 and 0.05mm. what do you guys think? BMW technical data say "radial cranshaft bearing play between 0.020 and 0.046"

regarding rods i only checked one the same way and found 0.05mm bearing play (so 0.025mm on each side of the rod journal)

also i have an issue with my compression ratio. i did volume measurement and found around 33cc for head combustion chamber and 24cc for piston and head gasket (1.8mm) volume.
S50B30 pistons have 1.2mm higer compression height than M44 (31.6 for s50 30.4 for M44) I shaved 0.7mm and rod have an offset of 0.5mm to have the same overdeck as standard.... yeah that sound weird and it's my mistake, I listened to a guy for this and i shouldn't have i think.

so that give me a 57cc combustion volume, and with the 485cc given by 83.5mm stroke and 86 bore it result in a CR of 9.5... aiming between 12 and 12.5 to compensated the higher duration cams that will close the intake valve later (12 static CR will give me around 10.4 / 10.5 dynamic CR)

SO yeah, piston volume is way too big, that why i ordered 12.5CR forged S50B30 pistons that comes with a small volume hoping that i will be able to make everything work and have a decent RV.

thats all for now. will post pictures and more stuff tomorow.

hi guys.

Here are some update with my car, if anyone have interest for it  ;D

car have been disabled in august 2017 and didn't had a chance to properly work on it since july 2019.

first things first. After reassembling it (intake, exhaust, auxiliaries, clutch gearbox...) engine is back in the car

The front brake setup. 4 pot brembo, 300x24mm disc and 15" wheels.

left the car as i had to go again for work (working away from home.

couple month later I came back and i took care of the inside of it.
from this

to this

and outside looking more decent but still far far far away from being clean

the bonus. i managed to finish the car to be able to go test it on the track near my place.

felt so nice to drive it again after all this years.

i left again for work the following day and only came back 3 month later

did a second track day, my brother in law used my little fiesta in the morning.

now time for upgrades.

working on this engine to have a little more power, will do a post in the build section.

also waiting for a half roll cage to arrive, have to figure out what to do regarding brakes as rear are still stock (just ds2500 pads)

did also some cosmetic to the car to make it look a little prettier

i will put pictures later on, need to put them on my laptop first.

currently working on the next engine with the free time we have thanks to corona.

hope yo guys will have interest in it

i guess you can get in contact with bruno Da Silva from BPS performance. He works a lot on M42/M44 and will probably help you.

hi MrPhatBob. really sorry to hear that.
If you're giving up and willing to sell i can be interested in the engine for my e30.

Well it's been a long time since i didn't post on the forum, even changed my user name  ;D
So, if people have some interets on this tread here's a little update.
After too much time without taking care of the car, mostly due to not having place to work on, and also wasting time on another e30 that i finally decided to sell.. thinks are changing now!
In 2014 i managed to do my first and sadly last track day with the 318is. I really enjoyed it! And here are some pictures of the day

After that i barely drove the car since a few mounths ago.. also because i was working on another car i have, a 2000 ford fiesta zetec s with puma engine and a few goodies to be added later on to make it a little track/fun car for my wife. The blue one was mine but after an an engine failure i replaced it with the grey one

Since August, i now have a house with a nice garage to work on the car, but sadly i'm now with no job...

So time to strip down the car to see if there are problem to fix, and solve the ones i already know!

All electrical harness is out! Car is à bit more stripped now, engine bay is empty

And some parts i bought for the future engine and for the car. E36 head with catcams 290/275, need to check but apparently hydro lifters have been modified, not replaced,  to solid ones. This will go on top of a m44 block bored to 86mm. I found an m47 crank but turned out to be a 90mm stroke with short nose so doesn't suit my plans. Also got à lightened single mass flywheel with renforced clutch.

Another part of my poject i have to take care off it's the braking. 4 pot calipers for everyone! Not sure to use this disc or solid one atm

I know that's why my plans are to use it as i want an engine with good torque from under 4k rpm and not one wich need to bé all the time above 5k

Head and cams are bought, next step ks to rebush the m44 conrods to see more about CR mesurements

No plan to rev high, Just got my hand on a ported head with home made solid lifters, dual springs and the 290/275 brand new all for the price of the cams alone
For the moment, don't know if i will stay with solid lifters, kinda like the maintenance free hydro lifters... And i don't think that under 7500 rpm and with à 290° cam hydro lifters can't do the job

So yeah 83,5mm stroke X 86mm bore, but not sur if using m44 or m42 crank at the moment, i need to see how things will go tol have a decent CR and enough clearence between valves and pistons with the 12mm/11,5mm lift of new cams

Engine + Driveline / Catcams 290/275 for n/a 1950cc m42?
« on: October 05, 2016, 04:10:49 PM »
Hi people.
Just à quick question.
I can get my hand on a later m42 head, so 6mm valve steam, with new catcams 290/275. Double springs and custom solid lifters
Plan is to put it on my m44 block with euro s50b30 pistons.
Do you think that will work ? What différence between the 290/275 cams and for exemple  the 298/290
Catcams refer to the first one as rally and cross cams and the second as rally and race.
What would i expect in therm of torque/ power distribution with the 290/275? I would like to keep the engine able to pull reasonnably before 5000 rpm, not fan of engine with all the power at 6000 rpm...
Don't plan to rev more than 7500 too.
Any advice?

Under 1k £? You can easily do  your own kit i think.  The web site i was talking about is Faulknersprings. You can find à lot of differents springs and with à little work you' can concert the front info coilover quite easily. I'm going to build my own suspension using their springs. Also have bilstein b8 that are'going'to be refurbed and harden a little

4 springs is about 150£, more or you buy thje seats to match the spring at the same time, I will make mines to suit the car as i don't want adjustable height.
Then find 4 bilstein or koni and you will start to have a good suspension.

Or you can buy à ground control coilover conversion kit. Is about 400$ iirc and then pût thé shocks you want

What's jour budget? Cuz without speaking about shocks, the groupe control coilover conversion look preety good. Someone told me about a company doing springs at différents rate, heigh,  diameter etc... Can't remenber the name
