Engine management / 318ti m42 will not start....
« on: December 30, 2008, 04:22:31 PM »
I allways thought Ti = M44 only not M42, anyway if its M42 E36 you will have to remove the upper intake manifold to reach the connections at the squib.
The squib is underneath the ICV, though luckily the connectors you need are at the top of the squib. :)

Hope the pics help you to get some idea of access and where to go. I cant run PS at the mo to circle anything but Im sure you get the idea.

Engine + Driveline / sickly e36 with phantom cel fault code
« on: December 10, 2008, 04:20:06 PM »
Go and pull the code again, you might have taken it down wrong??
1237 is the closest I could find, no referance to 1238. With a bit of luck you might have taken the code down wrongly and with the right code we can help you to fault find.
I noticed your engine mount was worn, that can lead to unwanted movemant which in turn can cause leaks tears in the exhaust manifold. Quite a common problem, which would give similuar running faults to those you are having.

Check for intake leaks with smoke and check for exhaust leaks...its not much but its a starting point. Also pull your 02 sensor and visually inspect, if its looking sooty or you dont know if its been changed from new, replace it. If you have misfires dont drive the car untill you get it sorted as you may fry the cat converter.

Engine + Driveline / timing case cover removal e36 m42 1.8
« on: December 06, 2008, 01:05:09 PM »
Yes you can, but there is a fair bit to do before you can have access. So if your going to do it may aswell prepare to do some maintenance so that your time is used well.
You will need to remove
Clutch fan if fitted,
Thermostat housing
Waterpump and pulley
Crank pulley

You will need to replace gaskets, drain the coolant and bleed after filling. I would take the opportunity to replace the thermostat, waterpump, all gaskets and possibly timing chain, sprockets, tensioner and guides. It depends on what you know of the maintenance hstory of engine, and visual inspection.

I am in the process of doing this myself, my advice would be that unless you are willing to spend some money it is not worth the time and effort involed to remove the timing chain covers. If you are willing to spend some $$ its not too hard and can be worth while preventative / needed maintenance.
