General Topics / Windshield washer tee issues
« on: January 25, 2012, 11:56:00 PM »
It's a pressure relief valve in case your washers get clogged.  I had the same problem... I just replaced the valve with a regular tee.  It won't protect the pump if my washers get clogged and keep trying to use the pump though, so I'll have to be careful.

Engine + Driveline / fuel leak when filled

My fuel filler neck leaks... have you taken a look and see if there are leaks near the top of the tank, fuel filler neck, the fuel lines, etc?

Engine + Driveline / Bmw E30 318is oil leak after oil change?
« on: December 28, 2010, 11:46:36 AM »
Yes, #9 is a copper crush washer and should only be used once.  Every time you tighten the drain bolt, it deforms to make a good seal and prevents leaks.

If you get a good oil filter from Mahle etc, the crush washer, o-rings, etc are all included in the kit.

General Topics / Clunking/creaking sounds from rear
« on: March 17, 2010, 01:22:30 PM »
When I had clunking sounds from the rear of my car while turning to one side, it was the backing plate the parking brake attached to. Try to jack the rear up and tap on the rear of the parking drake drum and see if you get any noises!  I broke my plate on the left rear going over a big pothole, had to get it replaced.

Suspension / Front wheel bearing issue??
« on: December 02, 2009, 02:01:16 PM »
To be honest I still don't know too much about cars, but I'm trying to learn :)

Anyway, you said that the right front also had "intermittent" resistance through the rotation?  If you say that you can't see anything rubbing... then I would guess that it's either the brakes getting stuck or wheel bearing.  It makes me think wheel bearing because the noise varies in the turns as the load changes.

Have you checked the temperature of the part of the hub where the bearing is after driving for a while?  A bad bearing has more friction and heats up more.  Just go take a feel after a drive, and compare the front left to the front right?    The front left is new, so that should be at a normal temperature!  If the front right is noticeably hotter, the the front right wheel bearing might be an issue.

Anyway, that advice about changing bearing in pairs sounds good to me, even though I only changed one out last year... everything is working fine for now.

Suspension / Front wheel bearing issue??

On the newer E30s and all cabrio E30s the rear wheels wells are lower than the fronts, that's correct.

When I had moaning sounds that varied when turning and speed like your car, it was my front right wheel bearing...

Thanks for the heads up!  I'm thinking about adding the map light to my car soon.
