For Sale / The Ultimate COP FS Thread
« on: October 05, 2012, 02:46:38 PM »
Perfect timing - I've been hunting for new wires. Before finalizing purchase, I'm curious what the feedback is regarding living in a dusty area.  For instance, I parked my car and didn't move it for about 6 months and there was still a good layer of dust in the engine bay...

Someone before asked a question that unfortuntely wasn't answered (well, I didn't see one, at least) - is there a way to put the stock plastic 'cap' that says "BMW" on it (or something similar) back on to sort of enclose it?  Or am I just being paranoid unnecessariliy?  Thank you!

Cheers,

H

Engine + Driveline / Oil on spark plugs 1 & 2
« on: July 11, 2012, 09:11:33 PM »
Hello, all.

As it says, there is oil on spark plugs 1 & 2... a LOT on 1 (the one closest to oil fill cap), and a little on 2.  3 & 4 are dry.

I believe this same thing happened about 4 years ago (~2 years of driving daily) and the mechanic changed the gasket.  Is something else causing the gasket to fail prematurely???      Your advice is appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

Henry

Engine + Driveline / Injector Popping out...
« on: April 23, 2012, 03:00:37 AM »
Just realized I never replied!  I keep forgetting to subscribe when I start a thread.

Anyhow, thank you for the helpful information.  Warsteiner, I will be taking your advice.  I have no plans for any significant modifications and yes, I realize how lucky I was that heat or a spark did not ignite the fumes!!!!!  This summer I need to remove the fuel rail anyhow to do some work on the cooling system, so I'll be replacing them soon.  Unfortunately, I cannot recall what I did w/ the original injectors!  Maybe I'll find them in storage somwhere...

Engine + Driveline / Mild coolant leak

Cool.  Thanks for all the input.  Yeah, then it looks like I need to pull it apart and really clean the heck out of it.  I think just for kicks I'll buy a new one w/ new 0-ring.  I'll go w/o the sealant.

Any tips on cleaning it?  I'm thinking of getting a soft wire wheel attachment for my dremel and getting that on it.  (Going to fill the hole w/ a heavy plastic to minimuze bits getting in there.)  I tried just regular engine cleaner and a towel when I first did the job and I could feel that the mating surfaces were not smooth.  I'm just afraid of going too far and boaring it out a bit.

What if I use something like this?

http://www.amazon.com/Hondabond-High-Temp-Silicone-Liquid-Gasket/dp/B006YTTV4W/ref=sr_1_25?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1334825320&sr=1-25

This website suggests it's designed for "metal-metal, metal-plastic, and plastic-plastic" - 3rd from bottom of page. Amazon page also indicates it won't corrode aluminum (makes sense since Hondas use a lot of aluminum)

Or, what about Hylomar "Blue" or "Racing Formula"?

Sorry for the delayed reply.  I forgot to "subscribe" to the thread (I wish it would auto-subscribe, honeslty...)

The pipe is/was new when I installed it.  I only buy oem unless otherwise recomended to buy OE or superior parts by group consensi from sources such as here, r3vlimited, etc.. For reassurance, however, I have no problem buying another new one if I suspect the pipe itself is the problem.  However, at this time I don't feel there is enough evidence suggesting that the pipe is the problem (yet).

It was so long ago, I cannot recall with 100% certainty that the o-ring was replaced.  If it came with a new o-ring, then I am pretty sure I used it.  I'll have to check that when the weather allows me to work on the car (I don't have a garage).

I do recall I had a heck of a time shoving that part in.  IF I do have a new o-ring in and I still suspect its the source of the leak, is it ok for me to use some sort of sealant to reassure me that its water-tight?

Engine + Driveline / Mild coolant leak

Hello FOlks.  About 3 years ago, I did a pretty much complete rebuild of the coolant system (and did the intake/plenum delete).  All new hoses, pump, clamps, etc.

Ever since then, there has been a slow leak as evidenced by a periodic small pool of coolant towards the front of the block (in that 'valley' under the intake and injectors).  First evidence was the squealing belts.  The leak has been very slow, but annoying.  The car was parked for  about 2 years, now driven a few thousand miles (3-4k.. the odo isn't working even with new gears..  another problem another day) and I'm just having to top off now.

When I first did the job I went crazy and redid everything... took it apart and put it together again - evey hose is SNUG.  I've narrowedit down to the one place I cannot tighten it - where the "water pipe connector" (http://preview.tinyurl.com/7clvxu5) joins with the block.  I intend to take out the pipe, use a dremel with a wire brush attachment to clean out the openning at the block, and reattach.

The question is this - any recommendation on a sealant??? I didn't use sealant the first 2 times b/c I didn't see it mentioned in the manuals I have or online. Obviously it needs to be high-temp, but it will also need to resist corrosion from the water.

Thanks in advance, folks.

Engine + Driveline / Injector Popping out...
« on: January 20, 2012, 10:28:53 PM »
Hello folks.  It's been about 3 years since I last worked on my car (worked out of state for 2 years and car was parked).

Before I left, I had installed some Mustand injectors P/N: 0280 155 710

After install, I did not have any problems.  Odometer broken, but I estimate at least a few thousand miles on them (5000-10000).  Then it was parked for storage.

After it parked about a year, one was leaking when I started it up the first time.   Pushed it back in and ran fine for about 20 miles (to move it to another location) then parked another year.  Yes, Stabil was used.

Now almost 2 years later (3 years since install), I've driven it a few thousand miles and bam... popped out again.  First it was just one injector that popped out (thankfully, the one accessible from the front).  I fixed that on Tuesday.  Now Friday, a different injector has popped out.

This is a video of the injector popped out and gushing fuel (injector closest to front).

Has this happened to anyone else?
Should I just go back to OEM or the e36 version (I don't know the P/N)?
Is something else causing extra pressure popping these out?
Or did I just not install them correctly?
Replace fuel rail?

This will be a non-track car (except maybe auto-x) run mostly on weekends.

Any wisdom would be appreciated.  I did a search and did not find any additional info on this happening to others.

Thank you!

Electrical / Instrument Cluster Lights
« on: July 21, 2011, 03:29:29 PM »
I'm glad you replied and I found this post, Dave!

I currently have my entire dash and cluster out... so while everything is out, I am trying to create a shopping list to replace ALL bulbs.

Since I am considering replacing with LED (hopefully will last longer), I am trying to find a shopping list with

Sylvania part number (I know 2721 is one of the ones I need) and

How many of each.

You wouldn't happen to know the answer to that, would ya?

Cheers,

Henry

PS:  I MISS MY CAR!  I haven't driven it in over a year - time to get it back on the road.

Second the hose delete.  Ij ust finished it.

BUT, if you don't want to and need replacement hoses, you can have mine.  Just pay shipping.  I bought new oem hoses and never used them b/c I did the delete.

Engine + Driveline / How to removie intake manifold from e30?
« on: July 10, 2009, 03:23:57 PM »
The biggest PITA is the crazy mess of hoses.  Someone (the hammer man himself ^^) already wrote up how to reduce that mess and it helps a LOT.  I just finished this job. Though I'm chasing down new leaks (not directly related to hose reduction), I'm glad I got rid of them hoses.  Unfortunately, I now have a box of brand new OEM coolant hoses...

Also, be sure to get replacement gaskets.

Engine + Driveline / Mustang Injectors in an M42 engine
« on: July 08, 2009, 08:01:17 PM »
I just installed these: 0280155710

Straight fit and very easy to install - even for novice like me.  No signs of leaks (about 300 miles).

I bought them off ebay (remanufactured) and didn't realize I bought 8 instead of 4.  So, I have 4 extra.  Who wants them?  (Asking $40 shipped in US or barter).  PM me if interested (I don't always check forum, but PM will prompt me to immediately).

Engine + Driveline / Bleed screw (radiator) leak help PLEASE
« on: June 22, 2009, 06:27:41 PM »
Crud.... ha ha.  That's what I assumed.  Any brand suggestions?  I'm looking at the Behr from Pelican (157.25).  The only other option is the Nissens or Valeo from thepartsbin.com.  I'm ordering the Behr.

The biggest kickers are:

1) I have to drain it again.. another $15 worht of radiator fluid and water wetter (I know it can be reused, but I don't trust the cleanliness of my bucket)

and

2) I had spent a good 4 hours with a plastic toothpick straighening fins and digging out pebbles, bugs, hairs, newspapers, etc... ACK!  What a waste.

Thanks for the quick replies, all.

PS:  I assume the toothpick was NOT supposed to be able to go through, right?  It's supposed to be solid plastic around that little tube?

Engine + Driveline / Bleed screw (radiator) leak help PLEASE

Thanks, Dave.  I'd appreciate it.  IF I need to replace the whole thing, I'm wondering if it is possble to 'bandaid' it until the next time I need to flush (hopefully I can afford a new rad then) by putting RTV sealant on the bleed screw?  I know this is not optimal, but if it works, it'll have to do.

Engine + Driveline / Bleed screw (radiator) leak help PLEASE
« on: June 22, 2009, 01:41:19 PM »
Hello, all.  I've spent the last 2 weeks working on this car only to have a leaking radiator bleed screw keeping the car off the road.

Simply put, it is leaking through the bleed screw.

I just replaced with a new screw ($8 from dealer!!) and it is still leaking.

I looked in and poked around to see if there were any obstructions - nothing.

I do not know what the anatomy is supposed to look like, so I will describe what I discovered.

In the middle of the hole, there is a metal(?) tube (like 1cm dia.) surrounded by plastic.  However, for about 1/3 of the circumferance around the metal tube, there is NO plastic (I could stick a toothpick all the eay through).  Is this correct???

So, I am curious what my options are.  Obviously, I want to avoid buying a new rad.  Hopefully I get some feedback soon or I will have to give up aand take it to a mechanic.... I need my car back!

Thanks in advance.
