Also, you say your car is a German spec 318i? That means it's got a single cam M40 engine. About 20bhp less than an M42. Worn cam shafts and noisy hydraulic lifters are a common problem with these engines.

So are the cam shafts hard to replace???? Your in the uk???

The 16 valve M42/M44 was standard on US and Canadian cars on both the 318is and 318i in the 1991 E30 and all 92-98 E36 cars. I think they did this because it was have been hard to be competitive in the US market with a 110hp 8 valve engine. Also BMW would have had to federalize and crash tests both engines separately which is a very expensive process. I'm not sure any of US know the details about the M40 engine. You might want to check out the local european bmw forums.
P.S. Are you US military stationed in Germany? If so, i think the laws allow you to import any car you buy over there. You could bring back something rare like a diesel BMW or another non US market car to sell over here for a profit. E39 or E46 diesel would be sweet. Or maybe an E36 or E30 wagon. cheers
Justin

yes im in the army and I can buy any car i want but to import (witch is free for one car) it would have to be changed to US spec's ... Meaning the motor and everthing is ok but the windows and gauges would have to be changed and i think thats really the only changed needed to be done for import.....the windows couse they are not shatter proof and the speed-o is in Km.... All you guys would love it here there are BMW's everywhere... there are no shit 6 bmw's sitting outside in my parking lot of my appt... 6 out of like 10 car' out there are bmw's .... you cant drive 1/4 mile without seeing like 7 BMW's on the road...

I went to the BMW dealership here in shcweinfurt geramny and they has some badass cars.. and the inside of the dealership had a strem going through it with running water really nice....

I might have to go back to the dealership and take pics for you guys and take some other pics of BMW"s driveing around here... let me know if you guys want me to do that and ill try to go this weekend and post them...

oh yeah and alot of opel's and cars ive never seen befor or knew about that look cool and some that look weird

Sorry man, had no idea you had SOHC.  I have no idea about the inner workings of your engine.  This is the M42 club!

so thats why everyone was saing that there was no rockers.... And i thought i was going crazy looking at them and thinking to myself that it looks like rockers to me... lol ... or maybe there called something else on bmw's but on other cars there rockers... yeah i thought i had a m42 myself till someone told me its a m40 not a m42.... lol

What engine does your car have? 8 valva m40 or 16 valve m42? Both were offered in Europe on 318i. The m42 already has a headed from the factory. The m40 was never sold in America.

Its a m40 its only got 8 valves...  why wasnt the m40 sold in the states????

I put a E30 6 cylinder rear end in my car and i can go 60 in first gear... not that i ever do. The difference between 318i and 318is.. at least in e30 is 4 door vs 2 door and also "better" suspension, sport seats and shadowline (for the IS) Probably a few things i missed but you get the basic idea.

I still can't get over the fact you are a Chevy guy in Germany.. you must get as much shit as us BMW guys in the states get.
[/B]

Not yet but im sure i will.. im stationed here so its all american people that i talk to... dont speak german and dont really talk to them eather....lol...
I like BMW's ... well the newer ones alot more then the older ones...
But yeah hands down chevy guy.. sorry...lol

Unfortunately I don't think a Volvo turbo will flow well enough for you to be able to run enough boost to get to 400bhp.

I was talking more about the intercooler then the turbo....

Doesn't help much on the tailpipe or dyno test, though.

Really ?? I would think it would help out a little... It worked well on my eclipse but that was a turbo. i did 3 inch down pipe and 3 inch exshust all the way back with a flowmaster. I sounded really cool and really deep it was like a corvette like sound. And it seams that everyone has there own idea on if turbos need back pressure or not ... I went with that the turbo dosn't but im sure there are people that would say they do and say they dont but besides that. It was a really easy job to do... I took the CAT out and pounded out the guts and then welded it back in... It would be even easier if the CAT ( like on some cars) bolts on with clamps...

I was thinking about getting a header for my 1993 318i german spec bmw ... I can tell there is a leak somewere in the exshust... That maybe the ticking i hear or maybe the lifters or maybe both..lol... (but beside the point) Is there a real diff in putting in a header? and is there a O2 in the header that will be need to replace?? and what kind of exshust or muffler do you guys think is good and not like borla thats like 250-300$ for a muffler. Has anyone ever put flowmasters on there bmw?/ i want a deep sound not a sound like a honda civic.

thanks

So did it make any more noise when you fixed it???? I know there is a leak somewere but i dont think thats where it is comeing from ... I can hear it under the valve cover.... Im sure the leak dosnt help out with the noise i bet it makes it worse...

@deltaneo1, you don't have speed limits in autobahn, right?

There are speed limits on the autobahn is some parts... but others there are none..befor i got stationed here i thought the autobahn was just one road... but its their highways.. Just some food for thought (or maybe you guys know that)?? . im at about 5000RPM's at 165-170k dont know what that is in MPH... but it sucks when cars are zipping by you at what seams twice your speed and your almost at redline in 5th gear. lol.... i dont race the car so im not worried about fast off the start or anything... Just like i said (just want to go fast)

and to clear it up just incase you read it wrong or i worded wrong its a 1993 318i ..... what i put was 1993 318i is a german spec ... sorry if that messed anyone up thinking that its a 318is .. and is there a big diff between the 318i and the 318is??????
