For Sale / 1992 318i Convertible For Sale Engine Issues. Boston, MA
« on: July 24, 2014, 08:32:37 AM »
I am looking to determine whether or not I will be selling my BMW E30. I'm looking for some serious/reasonable offers for which I will most certainly entertain.

Car: 1992 BMW 318i (E30) Convertible.  SEE LINK FOR PHOTOGRAPHS       http://boston.craigslist.org/sob/cto/4584822513.html[/b][/b][/b]

Located South of Boston, MA
Dark Blue with Beige Cloth Interior
Engine: M42 1.8L 4cyl.
Miles: 153,900
Trans: 5 Speed Manual
Car starts immediately, runs & drives.

I have had the car for a year now, working on it as a project. I recently registered it for the road, however while at my mechanic's shop last week, I was told the engine had a "sound" coming from the lower end of the block..long story short, it would take some time/labor to breakdown the motor to determine & fix the real issue. They told me it would be more economical to swap the engine for another. This would take less time and money to do. The mechanic stated "the engine does everything an engine is suppose to do, but this noise will need to be addressed sooner than later."

The Good/The Great:

1. The car has BRAND NEW Exhaust (resonator & muffler, w/ new brackets)
2. BRAND NEW drive belts
3. BRAND NEW Fuel Pump
4. BRAND NEW Fuel Filter
5. BRAND NEW Front Wheel bearings & dust caps
6. BRAND NEW Front 'IS" valence spoiler & Fog Light Delete Covers
7. BRAND NEW Convertible top (not installed - comes with the car)
8. BRAND NEW Spark Plugs
9. Nearly NEW tires all around
10. Interior is in phenomenal condition - Very rare CLOTH HEATED SEATS - NO RIPS OR TEARS
11. NO CRACKS in the Dash Board
12. NO VISIBLE RUST - Very Rare
13. Transmission shifts smoothly with no apparent issues
14. Sale will include a Brand New bottle of touch up Paint (coded)
15. Receipts in hand for all the above mentioned parts plus prior parts receipts purchased from previous owner.

The Not so Good/Great:

1. One of the 17" wheels shown in the picture needs to be repaired. There is small dent which won't allow it to hold air
2. Suspension needs attention. May need struts swapped out for new or used ones. They are squeaky in the front
3. Fuel Gauge seems to be hopping around. Based on the forums, this shouldn't be a challenging repair
4. Various black exterior trim pieces need to be replaced
5. two noticeable dents in the front fender and rear quarter panel. The rear dent seems like it would be very easy have pulled
6. Radiator leaks just a little bit of coolant
7. Misc. dings and knicks (usual wear for a car of this age.)
8. Previous owner removed the amp so the speakers need to be reconnected in a Stock manner

There you have it. I believe this car would be a terrific candidate for either an engine swap, whether that means upgrading the engine to an E36 motor, or to another stock M42.. The more of a DIY car guy you are, the better in my opinion. Like I mentioned above, I could consider my continuation with the project but if someone out there is willing to take it off my hands for the right price, I will be happy to entertain the offer.

Any questions at all, please don't hesitate to ask. I can respond to emails within minutes.

Engine + Driveline / Re: M42 Upper Oil Pan
« on: February 19, 2014, 09:05:57 PM »
This is great.

I actually spent some time under the car tonight and see that oil is leaking at the just the bolts. They didnt even seem tight so I re-tightened all of them hoping that that is my problem! With that said, should each of the upper pan and lower pan bolts have permatex coated on them as they thread in..?

Engine + Driveline / M42 Upper Oil Pan
« on: February 19, 2014, 10:09:48 AM »
Im this has been discussed many times already but does anyone have  step by step instructions with photographs of replacing the upper oil pan gasket? The Bentley manual mentions nothing about having to lift the motor but everyone seems to be saying this is necessary..?

are there any lazy man repairs (temporary sake) for a leaking gasket? high heat epoxy or something like that that someone could recommend?

Electrical / Re: please help! Temp gauge & tach not working still
« on: February 11, 2014, 06:00:33 PM »
Hmm okay very interesting stuff. I appreciate your research. Ill bring my SI board somewhere tomorrow to have it tested and see if those batteries are doing anything.

One more question for you.. I did install a brand new coolant temp sensor. This is the sensor which sends the signal to the gauge. My question is, if the other sensor next door to that one ( the brown one) which sends a signal to ecu is junk - will this effect the temp gauge at all?

would a bad sensor (the one that sends to the ECU as you mentioned above) effect the read out at the temp gauge?

thanks

I think it was the gauge sender..? It was the one with the brown plug, not the yellow which is connected to the radiator

i think there is a bigger issue here since the tach is dead as well..or two seperate issues.. i just dont knoww!

thanks

not sure if its worth noting but the car has been sitting the whole time even after the SI battery replacement. its a project but not sure if even new SI batteries need to be charged by having the car running a lot?

I know this is a popular post but I cant seem to figure this out still even with all the write ups out there

heres my issue: 1992 318i Convertible - gauge cluster has 153k on it. when i bought the car a few months ago, the tach and temp were dead. first thing i did was replace the SI batteries. no luck... then i purchased another used but tested temp gauge.. no luck. Both my existing and newer temp gauges did the same thing which is: upon turning on the ignition, the needle would peg to full hot and when the motor turned over, it would go back to cold..then no response.

You may say my SI board is dead, but when the car is on & idling - the service indicator lights are on. which is a sign that the SI board is getting power right?

any suggestions?? I'm worried that by replacing the whole cluster wont do it, and ill be into this issue for hundreds of dollars with no solution...

HELP!

Thanks guy!
