Ok last summer i rebuilt the m42, complete overhaul with engine, tranny ecu and harness out. I put everything back in and got it running. It ran good until last month when check engine light shows up. I was trying to retrieve the fault code by doing the stomp test. But the light wouldn't even blink at all. I've tried disconnecting the battery. I searched around on this forum, but it seems i'm the only one with this problem. Suggestions?

I'm reinstalling wiring harness, the wire that joins with the MAF and throttle position sensor. Does anyone know where that wire connects to? Thanks everyone.

Testing vacuum? I would just visually inspect the hose and replace the broken ones necessary.

Got the engine to run today. The starter housing wasn't making ground, so i ran a ground wire from starter to chassis. As for the check engine light not turning on, i removed the old relay and plug it back. It came back on...odd...because i had already tried that. Thank you DesktopDave for providing me with info.

the engine is not cranking nor do i hear the solenoid clicking...my next step would be to check voltage at starter and maybe take it out and bench test it. Would a failed ignition switch prevent the engine from cranking?

So i recently did an engine swap, i finish putting all the wiring harness back. I try turning the key but no check engine light or crank. The car is getting 12v to the system but somehow it is not getting power to the DME. I've checked the relays...what else should i look for? Thanks everyone.

In filter housing we have two check valves, I think it's more than enough.

So i removed the head on an e30 m42 and I didn't see the oil check valve on the block. Some people have been saying that only the e36 m42s have them. SO would it be beneficial to add the oil check valve on? Perhaps it already has one built in and cannot be seen? Thanks in advance.

So i have a 92 318is, the previous owner had different m42 place in. So how would you figure out the production date on this engine?...Should i look for a casting number on the block?

So I wanted to replace the valve springs on my M42 head, I noticed i have  dual valve springs. According RealOEM.com, M42 produced above 9/1992 have only the single springs. I own a 4/1992 M42.

So my question is can i get away by using the single valve springs they offer? or do i have to go with the dual valve spring?
