after doing more research, found out it's my ecu. cylinders 2 and 4's injectors weren't getting a firing signal after start. Pulled out my ecu and there was a lot of water damage.

Just got a used ecu (same bosch pt number) for $120 that's on its way.

so thanks for helping!

Engine management / anyone know compatible motronic programs?
« on: October 12, 2008, 12:24:45 PM »
I found that my ecu is a M1.7 program. Does anyone know if I can go to a M1.7.2?

also, If I replace my ecu with another, do I have to take it to a dealer to program the keys or something of that sort?

TIA

Electrical / lost two cylinders. Help needed
« on: October 07, 2008, 08:34:08 AM »
we pulled the ecm out and opened it and there's lots of water damage in there....

I tried cleaning it up and my pops is currently resoddering and cleaning up connections to hopefully fix it.

But in the meantime, anyone have a spare ecm I could by or try to use to see if my ecm is the culprit? OR does anyone know of a god bmw ecm rebuilder?

thanks

Electrical / lost two cylinders. Help needed

UPDATE:

I put everything back together and it was still not working...

tried some other stuff and then put a scope on the injector wires/connectors. no pulse for injectors 2 and 4, but strong, visible pulse for 1 and 3 as those are the only ones firing.... BUT thing is, right at start-up, all injectors fire, but then 2 and 4 instantly stop firing...

what's next guys?

thanks in advance!

M42 Buyer's Guide / Talk about your buying experience

I blew my sebring's motor at the track when my fuel solenoid for my NX kit became "ungrounded" and threw in a rather large DRY shot... blew 3 pistons. So I didn't have the money upfront to take it to a shop (these motors are really, really expensive!), or a place to pull a motor myself, so i just left it, sitting in my driveway there till my buddies in a auto tech class can swap motors for me for free, pretty soon actually.

So I was looking for a cheap, temp replacement. was looking at jeeps as I know those are bullet proof as I had one previously. But then I came across my local chicago auto club's (http://www.thechicagogarage.org) for sale section and someone was selling a "good beater" car. It was there and i saw some others post that it was a god deal for $1500 and I was getting desperate for a ride. So the next day i met up and bought it. Had plenty of cosmetic problems, like interior and pass door latch and paint fading, but after i fix my sebring, this is my new project car.

It's not bad, parts aren't a problem as some have told me they would, and it's a nice car for being 15 years old...

btw, I think i have a 92 (may be a 93, I don't know) e36 right? so do i have a m42 or m44? and do i have an airbag since it says SRS on the steering wheel?

thanks guys and I hope t build this car back up to good condition.

Oh and this car is 10x's easier to work on than my sebring...

Engine + Driveline / Need some help... constant misfiring.

my 92/93 318is has a constant misfire and it has almost now power. I believe that cylinders 2 and 4 are misfiring. All cylinders have spark. So I just finished replacing all the fuel injectors and still the same problem.

There isn't a code popping up and I'm lost at what to check for now. I don't want to just be replacing random parts hoping to fix the problem...

What else should I be looking for? Any help would be great! And anyone that figures out the problem will be paypaled some beer money!

Thanks guys

....wait, how did the wires shock you? if you where holding them (just the wire not the connector) and they shocked you then its definetly the wires.

the was a slight crack in the boot that when i squeezed it open, i then got shocked. We fixed that crack.

I have mustang injectors on their way now...

Electrical / lost two cylinders. Help needed

well after many hours of troubleshooting the igniting system, there is nothing wrong with that... and i need to correct myself, it's cylinder 2 and 4 that are not firing. I really suspect that one of those cylinders wasn't working before too as acceleration wasn't that great and stumbled a bit, but i never knew how the m42 was originally...
Then another cylinder gave up and now it was down to two cylinders... So we tore apart the intake manifold, upper and lower, to pull the injectors. one was physically broken as the plastic tip piece was disconnected from the injector and fell into the intake valve area... got it out and put a 12v source to it to open it and it barely clicked and let out the rest of the fuel compared to the other 3 injectors... so that was shot and i am now ordering new injectors (2) to put in for cylinders 2 and 4. So we'll see if that fixes this problem.

i got this car b/c I blew the motor in my chrysler and now im working on it more than my chrysler ;)

well if anyone has any other suggest or words of wisdom, let me know!

thanks

My guess would be the coils. If not that than maybe your fuel injectors are clogged

the coils are fine, we swapped in the plug wire and ecu wire (from the computer) to different coild and it would still do the same when we pull the other input connector out...

is there a wiring diagram for this?

TIA

So yesterday, after driving in heavy rains and some flooded areas, my motor lost almost all power while I was driving. Got it home and found out by pulling plug wires that cylinders 1 and 2 were not firing. Plugs are 3 weeks old and were fine. So then we swapped wires around and it's not the coils. My father (electrical engineer) did some testing and after switching stuff said it's not the spark plug wires either. I was shocked by the wires a couple of times though... So before the coils, is there anything that could've broke or something to have caused this? It's a 93 318is w/ 200k on it.

thanks in advance!

cool. Right now, I'm just getting it in top working condition and my current project is figuring out the hack job that was a stereo install by a previous owner...

oh and i put in 93 oct gas, and it runs MUCH better now... I didn't know it needed that... ha
