Engine + Driveline / Why does my e30 m42 sound like a diesel engine?
« on: August 30, 2009, 10:22:22 PM »
I think this is a cylinder head problem. When i first purchased my 318, it sounded like a diesel truck (i remember some girls in a suv laughing at my sh*t)...but yea, turned out that I had a warped head, after replacing it, all was well...

i have e30 318is having trouble finding light weight flywheel anybody have any  good sources for a supplier?

I did the conversion, this weekend. Following: http://www.blackforestindustries.com/m20flywheel.htm

Good luck...as for the starter, save yourself some time and do the gear switching, instead of using a 325i starter.

I tried to bolt the 325 starter right on, but did not line up, could be an error on my part...: x

Easy as that, thanks...

Engine + Driveline / Got it back on the road!! - Still with issues
« on: November 24, 2008, 09:39:12 PM »
Hey dude8383, thank you very much for the lower timing chain case. I put it on been 2 months now. After I got the car back together, I started the car up, but it was not keeping idle. So I ran a compression test, seems like I lost 2 cylinders, guessing I have bent valves..which sucks now that the car is back in one piece.

I have been driving with about 2-3 working cylinders... I recently found a guy from Canada (logger) that sold me a cylinder head w/o cams. I was looking around for you but lost our number and did not remember your username on the board, was gonna ask you for the head. (If you still have a head let me know)

Once I receive the head from Canada, I am going to install it hopefully al goes well and wish me the best on this..truthfully ever since I picked up this e30 (M42) its been a nightmare, loving driving the car, but I am not getting the full effect....

Engine + Driveline / BROKEN SPROCKET STRUCTURE - The source of my problems

wow! hey did you hear a chain kinda noise? not a chrunching noise, a rolling noise . Like the chain is kinda slack. Now I have replaced my tensioner spring a few months ago and really still have the chain noise. Any thought? I would like the input.

Not sure on the noise...because my situation was different from many others, but if you changed your tensioner and you still have that noise, then its your guides. If you do happen to go as far as checking guides, might as well do the chain and sprockets.

Engine + Driveline / BROKEN SPROCKET STRUCTURE - The source of my problems
« on: September 07, 2008, 08:06:56 PM »
Okay so today I took my lower timing case apart, and removed parts to fix timing problems. Attached are some images of what went bad.

The engine...

Broken sprocket chain slanted forward

After a closer look found that the structure was broken ;x

Lower timing case, marks left by chain rubbing.

Engine + Driveline / Tensioner Assembly...Is this true
« on: September 03, 2008, 08:46:53 PM »
The assembly consists of a plunger, spring, cap, and sealing ring. Is this true? More so the spring...do we have a spring in our tensioner's cap?

Engine + Driveline / Cam Gears

my sprockes WILL be getting changed:

1. If you adjust those bolts on the sprocket (4 slotted bolts), I am guess it advances your timing, or retards your timing...depending on which way you turn true?

2. If you change your sprockets, then you will be removing those bolts, so do you have to remember the mark and set back properly?

Engine + Driveline / Cam Gears
« on: September 02, 2008, 10:14:20 PM »
Truthfully I have no idea...but after I TDC everything, and start the engine it either starts and I have to rev it to stay on, or the car dies...then it wont start after that. Or it starts and if I rev it....it dies...and wont start again. So, I am guess the timing keeps going bad, so the chain is slipping..

Engine + Driveline / NO START after I changed chain tensioner
« on: September 01, 2008, 03:31:36 PM »
I figured out the chain keeps slipping and timing goes bad. I open valve cover and TDC the cams, pistons, etc. Put everything back together starts...rev and then slips, soo I am guessing I need to change chain, sprockets guides, and all.

I have been having the same timing, chain slipping problem...I put everything back together and TDC everything. On start car idles then dies, what ever the case seems like the chain keeps slipping, all parts look good...but everything looks good covered in oil. Anyone in the tri-state area good with m42 timing etc., and willing to replace all parts form ???

Well got fuel, got spark...I am guessing I messed something up with the timing..after I installed the tensioner.
