Engine + Driveline / Loss of compression in all cylinders?
« on: June 05, 2009, 10:01:34 AM »
Wow, that is way to strange, that other post has all the same symptoms, including a recently replaced cat.  Loss of power just before it died, then nothing but an occasional "poof".

Engine + Driveline / Loss of compression in all cylinders?
« on: June 04, 2009, 08:34:50 AM »
Ok, here is the current situation.

All cylinders read zero compression.

The timing chain looks OK.  Tight, and the timing marks seem to be lining up correctly.

The valve train is moving properly.

We added some oil to each cylinder and there was no change in the compression.

Any ideas?  Seems very strange to me..

Engine + Driveline / Loss of compression in all cylinders?
« on: June 01, 2009, 09:07:24 PM »
My daughter has a 91 318 that won't start.  They have just checked the compression and there is nothing on all cylinders.  The headers are loose, so a clogged exhaust is out.  Is a failed/broken chain common?  It seemed good when I checked it last year, but now the car is on the opposite coast...

Anything else that could cause this?

Engine + Driveline / Fuel pump relay?
« on: January 30, 2009, 10:25:46 PM »
I'm in New England, the car is in Calif.  From what I've been told it turns over, but no start.  Seems it was intermittently running rough for a while before this happened.  No real recent work except a new catalytic converter (universal).  Hmm I hope that isn't clogged, probably not likely, but that did happen to me once with a car I owned.

Engine + Driveline / Fuel pump relay?

My daughter's car won't start.  It has a new fuel pump from just last year.  I'm thinking maybe fuel pump relay or main relay.  I know where they are on a E30 325i M20, but have no idea on a M42 E30.

Help!

General Topics / Clicking from driveshaft
« on: August 24, 2008, 05:01:26 PM »
Turns out it was the ebrake cable!  It was very strange.  Adjusted to a very specific place, it would make a quite loud clicking.

Problem solved.

General Topics / Clicking from driveshaft
« on: August 23, 2008, 09:23:29 PM »
So I replaced my ebrake cables, subframe bushings, trailing arm bushings, guibo, and a bunch of other stuff..

Now everything is fine except I hear a clicking that sounds like it is coming from the center bearing, but that could be because that is where the driveshaft is directly connected to the body.  The clicking goes with the speed of the car.

There is something in the bently about preloading the bearing.  I put it back where it was before, but I didn't push it forward like it says (read it after)

Time for a new driveshaft?  Or maybe some other simple solution?

Also do the 325s and the late 318s share the same driveshaft?

General Topics / Swapping AC Compressor pulley?
« on: August 20, 2008, 04:54:07 PM »
I haven't yet got the pulley off, but I took it to an AC shop and he said my pulley is bad, not my clutch as I thought.  The two compressors look almost identical.  So any way to just get a new pulley?

BTW, I was expecting the car to not have any pressure, but when I pulled the compressor out I was shocked with a huge volume of R12.  Sorry ozone layer.

The person I bought it from said it would fit a 91 318i.  If it is just a matter of swapping the pulleys, that isn't a big deal.  I haven't taken the old one out yet..

I figure early E36s probably use the same compressor, but obviously different belts.

Thanks

General Topics / Anyone ever replaced an ebrake cable?

YES!  But time and money are tight, so I'm just replacing the subframe bushings, control arm bushings and brake hoses.  :(

I got a replacement compressor.  It looks the same as the old one except it has a different pulley.  Can I swap them?

General Topics / Removing the mess under the intake
« on: August 16, 2008, 07:17:14 AM »
I figured out that was a hose for coolant from the heater, but I was going to put the TB back on as is and leave that disconnected.  I'll look again to see what else I have to remove.

Thanks for the help on this.

General Topics / Tank swap??
« on: August 16, 2008, 07:08:47 AM »
Some years ago, I bought one for my 325i from NBGastanks.com.  At the time it was about $200 shipped.  I think they are higher now, but probably well under the $500.

The website they used to run seems to be taken down, but the contact info is in this thread.

I am taking the stuff out below the intake as described on this board, and I was looking at these tired looking injectors and wondering if I should at least spray them with gumout.
