Vendors / GB / Feeler: Custom Cam Grind
« on: January 30, 2009, 08:16:45 PM »
I am having an extra set of cams ground to an estimation of Shrick specs... the guy knows what he is doing.  Used him for my Mercedes m103 and it REALLY woke that lump up.

Anyway.

If all goes well with my grind then I can have a second set cut and ready for sale.  This means you have to send a usable set to receive your ground set.  I am sure I can pick up a third set of cams, but I don't foresee selling more than five sets total so that would not be worth the trouble.

I can also work this so that you can have a custom grind of your own.

A set will cost you $400.00 plus shipping.

This data was exactly what I wanted!  Thanks.

I am having my head rebuilt I begin tear down this weekend, probably tonight actually.

Does anyone have a definite spec for clearance in a completely stock 1991 m42?  Not looking for guesses and opinion, but instead concrete math.

I was thinking the turbo for a Volvo 740 would work great... they are not huge, but intended for a SOHC 2.3 L engine... that should work with the 1.8 DOHC if you are not looking for huge gaines...

the other thing I am looking into is using the factory down pipe from the Volvo... will see

I was just curious - how easy or hard is it to do a complete serpentine belt conversion on the M42?

What are all of the parts needed to do this (is there an online link or tech)?  Does the front timing cover need to be changed?

you need the bracket that holds the alternator and the serpentine accessories... I think the power steering pump is the same, just swap pulleys...

There are part numbers on realoem, not sure if they are available anywhere.
I would do the glue on seperates like OE.

I think I had a 325 that had a screw on panel...

Ohh, no deadening on the underside of your hood?
You should get that, it helps keep the noisy M42 hushed :)

I have been putting it off... I have a big dent on the leading edge... but I got my buddy's stud welder/puller so I can fix it.

I wonder if the glue on style is quieter than the one piece one...

My engine mounts and transmounts relatively new...  I am thinking about adding a torque dampener like the old m10 had...

I may add some sound deadening under the hood as it is gone...

How close is this thing to working in an e30?

Turbo e36 Mani on eBay

I can weld and hammer, and modify if this thing is relatively close to working an in e30...

I really like the m42 for it's fuel efficiency, weight, quick revs, blah blah, but mines is not the most smooth.

It is like silk at idle now, but 3000 to 4000, which is highway cruising revs, it is very loud.

I am changing the differential to a 3.73 LSD to make it a little more highway friendly.

The thing I want to explore is what to replace without rebuilding the bottom end...

Already did the tensioner
Thinking about doing the lifters next (think cam grind too)
what else if that does not work.

Engine + Driveline / No Heat?

Mine had the opposite symptoms until I corrected the issue last night.  The heater hoses at the firewall were reversed.  I only got heat at idle and cold air while driving.

This is worth checking... I did this by mistake with my m50 swap a couple years ago and had temp flux issues and no heat unless I mashed on it and then the core exploded to boot!

So did you do the retro fitted check valve or replace the factory one... which I assume requires a the entire pump...... or what?
