For Sale / FS: 1993 m42 in NJ
« on: April 26, 2011, 06:05:41 PM »
I leave for basic training in a few weeks and I need to start getting rid of my stuff.
I have a m42 from my 93 e36 that I swapped out for an m50.
The motor has ~60,XXX miles, compression was good last time i checked before the swap, it had a misfire but I'm sure it's an easy fix.
The only problem with it is, one of my idiot friends cut the wiring harness because he had the great idea of scrapping the engine. But, I have another wiring harness I will include with the engine, so its not too much of a problem.
Comes with all the accessories, DME and everything.

Local pick up only Located in West Milford NJ, about 45 mins away from NYC, 30 mins away from Paterson NJ
Looking to get $400 OBO
Looking for a quick sale so throw out your offers

Yeah, the firing order is all correct.

I actually pulled the DME today and there was no sign of water.
I will check the camshaft and crankshaft sensor tomorrow.

thanks

A couple of weeks ago while driving, my 318 started to run terrible. It had no power, smelled terrible, and sounded like a Subaru STi.
After looking at it, Cylinder #2 and #4 are completely not firing. We checked the wires, and plugs and they're working fine, except every cylinder gets spark expect for cylinder #4. My coil pack was looking pretty haggard so I went out and bought a new one. Still no difference, and cylinder #4 was still not getting spark.
I checked the injectors also and they're also working.

Any ideas of what this problem is/ what I could check?
Its a 95, and the motor only has about 80k.

Thanks for any help

General Topics / Why do people give the M42 engine a hard time?
« on: April 12, 2009, 01:06:54 AM »
I never drove an m42 in a e30, but I imagine it being a better motor for the lighter e30 than the heavier e36. My only complaint about the m42 in my e36 is that its too slow, otherwise its been a bullet proof motor.

Sweet!  I'm looking forward to meeting people who actually care about their cars for a change.  The people in the area here just give up on the car and run them into the ground!!!

I saw the white e30 convert.  It was a little banged up but I'm pretty sure the guy loves it!!

hey i was just wondering, do you go to PCT or are you still in hs?

Hey man I just got from there last night. There was a nice black e30 in one of the dorm parking lots, and a couple e36's. The girl to guy ratio sucks there though haha. I'll probaly see your car up there since my gf goes there and I'll be there on the weekends. If you see a metalic silver e36 with an m3 front bumper that would be me haha.

Hey, my friend actually goes to that school, although he is probaly getting kicked off campus becuase of 3 underage drinking tickets(moron). IDK about the e30 crowd up there though since I've never been there lol. But I'm actually going up there the weekend of January 23rd. I'll be driving my m42 up there, e36 though.

Engine + Driveline / Fan Delete Mod

I got another question too. I saw this
Quote
Adjust the cam timing - You know how on the E30 M3 you have to buy a $300 kit with adjustable cam sprockets to tune your cam timing? Not on the 318iS! The M42 is equipped with tunable cam sprockets from the factory. So pull your Cosmoline covered valve cover off and with the proper tools you can tweak your intake and exhaust cams up to 6 degrees +/- to provide more top end horsepower or more low end torque. See, you don’t have to blow a grand on a set of Schrick cams to make your M42’s cams a little hotter. The best setup is to adjust the intake cam to 5 degrees (advanced) and leave the exhaust cam alone. I would recommend having a shop do this work.

And was wondering if anyone has done it? I race motocross and I have done basically the same thing to my race motor. But I was wondering if any did it, and does it work with the e36 m42?

Well on bimmerforums this is a big thing to do for the 6 cyl's. But can we do this to our m42's? Better yet, is it worth it? Any power gain?

hmm I'm also very interested in this. My friend has like 3 or 4 turbo's from his eclipse, so all I need is manifold and intercooler and all that. Question: Would any recomend the OBX turbo manifolds off ebay?

Engine + Driveline / I need help...
« on: September 17, 2008, 08:25:40 PM »
thanks for the reply, bimmerforums was no help, so I signed up here. Tommrow I'm gonna pull the intake manifold off and just replace all the hose's. Also, what is the TB heater delete, and what does it do? I'm gonna search that right now.
The deal with my car is... I used to have a 93 318is, but I totaled that. I found a 95 318i with a motor that was no good. So I swapped them and I got the 93 motor in the 95 shell. So I have a whole parts car laying around. The motor out of the 318is only had 50k miles, so the cat out of that is pretty newish. So I'm gonna throw that one on if I have too.

Oh yeah, I have a friend named Jimmy Lewis, so I had to double check to make sure that you weren't him lol
