Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / Getrag 240 Torque Limit Found

are you running the 228mm clutch and flywheel set? single or dual mass? the dual mass entire setup from g260 e30 is = the g250 e36pn which is = stack height as s52's 240mm dual mass setup for ZF SG320

the S52 uses a dual mass setup stock, have you tried using that or at least comparing the original S52 clutch with the setup you are trying to run?

OEM sachs S52 clutch holds more than 350rwhp, so you could just run the stock item.

left is a E24 633CSi single mass flywheel setup in 240mm (OEM BMW)
right is UUC stage 2 single mass flywheel setup  for S52 e36m with zf trans with Sachs e34m5 clutch+pp+friction disc

I would use whatever TOB is used in the E34M5 clutch kit

hmm. it will not idle at all, it fires up, runs for 2-3 seconds, and dies.

i thought AFM, but thats been replaced.

it does have fuel and the regulator was replaced. is there any way the fuel pump could be dead?

it dosnt change with throttle at all, so im pretty sure its not a mechanical falure, it seems like the ecu is dis-alowing the engine to continue running after 2-3 seconds

could it be crank angle sensor? do thoese things die gradually or randomly?

5
1444 is what i get

all clear?

6
ok, so when i crank, it fires up great and dies after about 3-4 seconds

so these parts came off a running m42 (drove into garage):

tps, crank/cam sensors, AFM is new from local recycler, fuel pump is confirmed working still as gas does come out of the fuel lines when ign+ is on

what else could be wrong? what could cause the ecu to cut engine after 2-3 seconds?

Engine + Driveline / Exhaust header gasket - is this a DIY?

you may need a bolt extractor to remove rusty bolts, but its pretty straightforward to do, just follow fsm instructions-

Electrical / starter issue upon engine swap re-install
« on: June 20, 2008, 08:46:23 PM »
hey-

wondering if this is a fusible link issue, just changed longmotors and it seems that my starter isnt getting enough juice to turn over-

headlights work, battery is full charge, is my starter dead or is it just not getting enough power?

figured  it out-

ground strap on non driver side from chassis needs to ground to engine to complete circut, starts good now.

just changed engines, on re-install we omitted the metal plate in between the engine and the trans.

Will this cause binding? i have another plate, the other one was removed because it was too bent.

Engine + Driveline / M42 vs S14?
« on: June 16, 2008, 10:52:04 AM »
its not sugested for street use or bmw use at all.

a evo 2.5 s14 is prepped for na power similar to a built 4a (which is a comparison only)

read often?

IF YOU READ, you would understand what i am saying.

4ag 1600cc toyota engines are used in FORMULA ATLANTIC open wheel cars. only for real racing use are they tuned to that kind of level, and of course - if you have to ask how much $$,$$$  - then you cannot afford one :P

i definately cannot afford a 280hp 1600cc 4A, but they are readily avail for those with deep deep pockets, even for street use.

a nice built street EVO 2.5 S14 should run close to 10K brand new. a 280hp 13,000 rpm 4AG race motor will be pretty similar in price.

for sure. prestige of a EVO 2.5 S14 is second to none for production, if your bankroll is deep there are plenty of buildups akin to a toyota 4ag 1600cc 16v, those will pull ~ 280 ps ~ 13,000+ rpm in open wheel cars with qualifying race maps

S52 may be more powerful but its definitely not as prestigious compared to the S14.

Afterall, the E30 M3 is one of the most successful racer BMW has ever build. Thus the S14 is pretty much a racing engine. Imagine revving at 8K RPM down the streets....Its going to be awesome.

Perhaps that is why the S14 still csot so much today despite being such an old engine. Seriously, I would love to have one in my car. Sadly, I can't afford it.... :(

you can repeat this kinda bench racer data over and over again, but have you ever driven them side to side? or owned them?

I speak from an owners perspective.

S14 is expensive bc its OLD and rare.
in reliability, S52>S14
in power and performance of the powerplant S52>S14
if you had a E30 M3 and wanted to do somethign crazy to it, S52 swap would be a good value option.

Not everyone has the money for a 2.5L s14 evo2 build up, but the same performance can be stuffed in a 318is inexpensively with a newer M3 motor. how can that be bad?

If you really wanted a S14, you'd buy the car with it.

Engine + Driveline / m42 engine guru advice needed :)
« on: June 13, 2008, 07:20:41 PM »
hmm

ok.

so:

no coolant and oil mix. Oil is not burnt inside the engine as it just passed california emissions SMOG test a few days ago.

I checked the tensioner, it is the e36 style and good. Oil pan is newly replaced

What gaskets could be leaking on the side- We are pulling the engine to do the clutch and refresh, so I was thinking about doing a full headgasket timing cover gasket swap, anyone have a reason why this would not be needed?

compression is good, car idles and drives great still.

slight metal flake in oil, so we are going to change the rod and main bearings as well, while the engine is out.

Are there any other things i should do?

what are the charecteristics of a blown profile gasket in this senario- does it even matter to me?

first concern is metal in oil, the car still drives, idles, etc perfect- Do you think i need to prepare for oversized bearings

I dont want to do oversized, no machine shop i like here that is within budget for a M42.
if i was building a S62.......differnt story :)

basically, I'd like to order all my parts for rebuild from pelican parts today, how much risk am i taking if i order standard sized bearings - i have good rep @ pelican, so return is not an issue if the plastiguage says so-
