For Sale / 1991 e30 m42 Chumpcar FS wrecked
« on: August 21, 2013, 08:43:13 PM »
Up for sale is our 1991 BMW 318is, built specifically for endurance racing with chumpcar.

As with all endurance cars, lots of time and money was invested to make this car not only competitive but reliable. The hard work paid off as the car claimed top finishes throughout the year, including a 4th place a few months ago at the Daytona 14 Hr Chumpcar race out of around 120 cars. Unfortunately, just a few weeks ago, during the 24 hr race at VIR, we were hit in the driver's rear, sending us spinning into the armco, and leaving us with heavy hearts and a car that needs more time and money than our team can invest to get back out there.

Prior to the incident, here is a basic rundown of the car:

The chassis was in great shape prior to the wreck. There is little to no rust on the underbody and subframes and suspension components/frame rails.

A great deal of time had been spent to extensively lighten the chassis. Weight was around 2100 lbs without driver. The hood, trunk, and doors had been skinned. Lexan has been installed in the rear window and rear side windows with rivets and caulk. We also have the lexan windows for the front doors if you want to install them. Misc items have been shaved off the chassis including the door handles, spare tire well, etc., in an attempt to lower the weight as much as possible. The underside of the body has not been touched, and that would be the next step. We estimated the car could potentially lose another 50 lbs if time was invested.

The rear half of the cage was installed by Piper Motorsports a few years ago. The front half of the cage was added on by Carlos at AutoDynamix.

The motor has been checked after every race and performs fantastic. Visual inspections have shown no signs of abnormal wear. If it would help with the sale, we would be willing to do a compression/leakdown test to prove this. As preventative maintenance, we have replaced the cam gears, primary tensioner, valve cover gasket, upper timing case gasket, front main seal, and removed any unecessary vacuum hoses as we deleted the heater core. We installed a new radiator with new upper and lower hoses and a new plastic water pipe on the block (common failure point).

A low mileage transmission with a new slave cylinder and a breather tube was just installed prior to this event, and worked flawlessly during the 14 hours it was run. Driveshaft CSB and diff bushings had been replaced with new OEM bushings. There was no play in anything and the drivetrain itself was tight and responsive.

The car has the spece30 springs (H&R) and shocks (Bilstein) - which work very well. The car also has M tech swaybars, which work well with the lightness to provide great handling, while keeping the car well within the rules and competitive for Chumpcar - our former primary racing organization. Most importantly, the car has brand new rear wheel bearings (PIA) and relatively new front wheel bearings.

In order to be able to continue our fast pace throughout the night, no expense was spared with our light setup. For our primary light, we installed a Rigid Industries X inch light bar. We also had two secondary LED lights from SuperBrightLED for shedding light on the corners of the track. These are all still intact and in good working order.

Post incident assessment:

Looking at the above picture, we were tapped in the rear by the red car, sending our car into a spin towards the armco, where the front end was hit, the front right taking most of it, then the car continued in its spinning while spinning, causing the rear driver's side to also hit armco.

The cage has not been damaged or affected in any way from the contact with the armco. If considering buying this car for parts, the cage could definitely be cut out and used again.

Several pictures were taken of the damage are here:

It is or should be clear that our car has sustained significant damage in the driver's rear and passenger front corners; however, much of the equipment is still intact. Additionally, the car still rolls just fine, and it appears as though the subframes and suspension is intact as the wheels are not terribly misaligned.

Of concern is the passenger front frame rail and shock tower. They both appear to have sustained some flexing/bending/buckling and it is unclear as to how significant the damage is. http://skandsen.smugmug.com/Cars/Chu...d8sbv&lb=1&s=O

http://skandsen.smugmug.com/Cars/Chu...gtjtT&lb=1&s=O

The rear is self explanatory; however, it again appears to be bent sheet metal and not really any significant structural damage in the rear - all damage behind the rear subframe/shocktowers.

The hood and trunk are damaged beyond repair.
We are unsure as to whether the radiator is still salvageable, but it appears to not have any leaks after the contact.
Our misc lexan parts and aero additions are still intact. The seat and belts are still in the car, and we assume that they are not fit for use again.
We have a plurality of tires including 205/15 Yoko AD08s and 185/15 Falken RT615s which will come with the car and should last many races.

Because this car was an endurance car, a plethora of additional parts were collected to ensure we would continue through any minor hiccups in between races or at the track itself. Accordingly, these parts are at least what is being sold with the car. The car will probably come with more things than listed here as well.

Transaction Feedback / BrandC

I was trying to be efficient and get it to him fast. We had exchanged several emails and he was allegedly ready to purchase. I guess I'll just be slow next time.

By the way, anyone need an HVAC controller. Man I hate that guy.

BrandC informed me that he wanted to buy the HVAC panel out of my car for $20 including shipping. I pulled the part off the car (including all of the mounting hardware) and had it packaged at the local UPS Store to insure there wouldn't be any damage.

After letting BrandC know that it was packaged and ready to go, I PM'd him and let him know. From here there was no response for a couple of days followed by a message that he didn't wish to buy it anymore.

Very unprofessional and I don't suggest doing business with this person.
