Engine + Driveline / puzzling and need some troubleshooting help
« on: November 04, 2012, 09:36:27 PM »
hey guys my car has been in storage and i've been neglecting it.  today i went to plug the battery back in the car and to start it.  the car fired right up but was idling weird like struggling to keep idle.  then the engine check light came on and the car idle perfectly.  i let the car warm up and unplugged the battery and waited 30 seconds before plugging the battery back.  restarted and the check engine light goes off and the car struggles again to keep idle then the engine light comes on and it idles perfect.

so im guess is the o2 sensor plugged up?  im really a novice to this any help would be appreciated.  it seems like when the engine light comes on the car runs great.  does it mean im in limp mode?

any ideas?

edit: just did the stomp test and got 1215 Air Mass/Volume Sensor.  does that point to the AFM being bad?

Electrical / wiring an electric fan

+1 on that...the OEM BMW parts are the best.

There's a million ways to skin this cat, but I'd do something like this:
Any aftermarket fan should have a standard 4-pin relay and fuse.   I'd  mount that to the car up front, maybe near the AFM.   I'd strongly  suggest disconnecting the battery until all wiring is completed.  I'd tap into switched power under the dash to the toggle switch, maybe off the stereo harness.  Then I'd run the other toggle switch terminal wire through the firewall plug to relay terminal #85.  Next, wire relay terminal #30 with an inline fuse right off the power block on the passenger side firewall.  Then, run the fan power off relay terminal #87.  Finally, wire both relay terminal #86 and the fan ground to the front grounding post (driver's side inner fender).

thanks for your help and tip.  do you have pics.  i don't really have any clue as to where these wirings are.

Electrical / wiring an electric fan
« on: November 27, 2011, 09:41:37 PM »
hey guys want to see if anyone has a diy with diagrams and pics on how to wire an electric fan to a toggle switch.  i know i can use the aux fan circuit but i would like to keep that there and have a backup puller behind the radiator since i deleted my clutch fan for the hot southwest summers.

i searched but couldn't find a diy for it.  my main questions are im thinking i need to run a relay and a power source for the fan.  any suggestions on where to get the power from and how to wire it up.  thanks for all the help. looking at a 16" spal puller behind the radiator.  thanks

Well you can use the aux fan wiring to control the 14" like I do. Basically works like stock just pushes more air. Regarding the 16" puller, can you try to wire it to the same wiring but that will probably overheat relays and fuses.  I would suggest you just run 12v to it from a source, and add switch.

i was going to add a switch for the 16 inch puller.  where would you suggest for the 12v source??

just read the thread and looking to ditch my aux fan.  i already ditched the clutch fan running a lower temp switch and water wetter also running new temp gauge sender.  the car runs pretty cool but hits about halfway sitting traffic.  i would love to put a 14" in the front where the aux fan used to be and a 16" puller behind.  i was wondering how the wiring would be on that.  i would like the aux to turn on with the low temp and have a separate switch which i can control for the puller 16" is that possible?

Ok, quick question about the ICV.  Which way should the arrow (--->) indicating flow through the ICV go?  From the manifold to the rubber intake boot or from the intake boot to the manifold?  In looking at the pictures posted some have it reversed going one way and some have it the other.

Thanks!

on mine the arrow is pointing toward intake manifold.  hope that helps. best mod i have done to the car.
