Engine + Driveline / Fan Mod Delete
« on: March 23, 2007, 06:20:11 PM »
I've been driving with this mod since last July.

I noticed a little more free reving but nothing major.  I also installed the 80C/88C  temp sensor for the electric fan, and deleted the A/C including the condensor.

I havnt had any problems overheating even in 90 degree weather.  The only time it even starts getting above stright up on the temp gauge is when I'm sitting in a drive through for a few min in very hot weather.  Then when im just below 3/4 on the temp guage the high setting on the electric fan kicks on and cools it right back normal.

I like it and would do it again, but I wouldnt suggest it for anyone that wants to keep their A/C unless they want to install an extra aux fan.

No go.

You need a 0v to 1v signal for the dme

I really dont think that you will be able to hook a aem wideband up to your factory harness and expect it to work.

Wideband o2 sensors use a 5 volt signal and regular o2 sensors use a 1v signal, and thats just the start of the differences.

Dont know exactly what colors are for what but you have a power and ground wire for the o2 sensor heater, and a positive side and a negative side of the "battery" in the o2 sensor.

Here is the ETM.

For some reason the 318is ETM is missing from BMW's website so this is the one from the 318ic, should be exactly the same.

Electrical / ECU Plug

Just a suggestion, but BMW sells break out boxes for diagnosis.  Have male and female plugs on the part.  Probably costs about 100 bucks to get one though.

is it possible to build the m42's power to around a 325is ? i want to gain some power with out an engine swap or boost. i was thinking about chip air intake and ect.

My 318is is faster then my roomates 89 325is 5spd any day of the week from any speed.

I have very slight mods that work well together to get 15.8 second 1/4 mile times. With 15" rims and 225/50's

If i remember correctly stock (5spd) times are about as follows.

M3 15.3-15.5
325i 16.0
318is 17.5

My mods...

K&N Drop in
Coil on plug
Mark D 93 Octane chip
11lb flywheel and 325i clutch
4.10LSD
Deleted A/C, P/S, Fan, Fan Clutch
Stock Exhaust.

Engine + Driveline / M42 loud clicking...
« on: February 25, 2007, 07:11:21 AM »
I would try replacing the hydraulic tensioner for the timing chain.  Odds are that its never been done and they are known to fail and make a lot of noise.

Its a 45 dollar part from BMW, make sure you get the one from the 1.9L z3 engine.  Its the "updated" part.

If that doesnt take care of it I would take a screw driver and hold the handel end up against your ear and put the other end on other parts of the engine and see if you can tell where the ticking is coming from.

Engine + Driveline / 20psi on M42
« on: January 30, 2007, 05:15:44 PM »
You could get away with thick MLS headgasket technically.  If you get the CR around 8.5 or 9.0 to 1 you shouldnt have a problem.

I used to be into the turbo mitsubishi's and they had no problem running 20psi on cast rods and crank as long as you fed it good gas and your tune was good.

Electrical / COP Brackets: Your Preferences?
« on: January 07, 2007, 10:21:27 AM »
Those are the bosch ones that I used for my setup.  They are more powerful but require them to be mounted differently.  The COP Bracket that is discused in this thread is not compatible with those coils.

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / 666 Fab Tubular Manifold
« on: November 30, 2006, 07:44:50 AM »
Compaired to a similar Full Race brand tubular manifold for a honda this is a STEAL!

I bet Full Race has sold HUNDREDS of their manifolds and they still cost 975.

I just double checked... they now run 1199 TO 1499.

If the build quality is as good as the other manifolds on his sight it seems to be about on par with the stuff full-race is doing for the import crowd.  You cant touch one of their manifolds for less then 1099, and they sell a lot more then 666 ever will.

750 to me is a decent price for a tubular one off manifold.

I cant wait to take a trip up there and see what he's got so far.

Engine + Driveline / new radiator
« on: October 29, 2006, 05:37:08 PM »
I was told by my shop foreman that when replacing the radiator or the expansion tank on our cars you can never get them to re-seal correctly.

The bleeder screw was broken off on my expansion tank and the radiator just started leaking so i replaced the whole thing with one from a junkyard.  100 bucks :)

I want it just like this guys :P

He said something about selling them for 300.... that might be pounds though since hes from the uk.

Im sure there isnt too much difference between the s14 and the m42 on the exhaust side.
