Engine + Driveline / Bleed Brakes?
« on: January 11, 2010, 11:40:30 AM »
I'm replacing a grommet on my master cylinder fluid reservoir, do I need to bleed the brakes after doing this?

I wouldn't think so, due to the fact that I'll just remove the fluid from the reservoir, remove the reservoir, change the grommet, put the reservoir back on, then refill.

I did not use one.  I just backed off each nut 1/4 turn at a time.

Engine + Driveline / E30 M42 rebuild - expectations and realisms
« on: July 06, 2009, 02:35:46 PM »
Take the info for what it is....i have no reason to blow smoke....it is what it cost me to properly rebuild it.  I'm sure I could have just done it for less, new bearings/gaskets/timing components and been done with it, but I only wanted to do it once.

This was/is a stock motor.  The piston and valves did add some to the total, but this also included the head being rebuilt, the crankshaft checked out and mangnafluxed, rods rebuilt, engine balance, and the block checked out and honed.  You will also have to replace the head bolts and main cap bolts, as these are TTY bolts and can only be used once.

Engine + Driveline / E30 M42 rebuild - expectations and realisms

No...nothing special. I did have Metric Mechanic modify my main caps to accept the full thrust bearings.  The stock M42 only has half a thrust bearing.

Other than that, I replaced the oil pump assembly and the complete timing system (timing case included).  I figured I only wanted to do it once.

For my parts, I used pelicanparts and Tischer BMW.

Engine + Driveline / E30 M42 rebuild - expectations and realisms

I just got done doing a stock rebuild.  I had everything checked out/rebuilt (crank, rods, head, etc.) at the machine shop.  I also replaced all timing guides/components, gaskets, hoses, etc.

It ended up costing me around 3000-3500.  That also includes replacing a piston and 4 valves due to my timing guide exploding:D

Sorry if you might have already done this previously, but have you done a compression check.  Might be blowby??

Engine + Driveline / Who makes the OE chain tensioner?
« on: June 13, 2009, 08:21:51 AM »
INA is listed as the OE supplier, from Pelican Parts.  Got mine there and have had no issues.  For a BMW dealer, you might try Tischer BMW at http://www.getbmwparts.com.  Dealer parts, but not dealer prices.

Engine + Driveline / M42 Head Gasket Replacement Tools Question.
« on: June 10, 2009, 09:21:12 AM »
I did not use the tensioner tool, you can use the existing tensioner to "hold" the chain tensioner.

You can use any E12 socket, but you will have to remove the cams.  Just be very careful, as the cams are hollow and can fracture.  Back off each nut on the cam holders a 1/4 turn at a time starting from the center.

Good Luck

Did you replace the fuel filter?  Might be a restriction?

If you've checked for vacum leaks already, I would check/clean the ICV valve.

Engine + Driveline / oil leak on rear of engine

Depending on age/mileage, it's worn out.  I used BMW when replacing mine.

If it's a fast drip, I would suspect a rear main seal.
