Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / BMW Rods specifications table

My friend has 318is turbo boosted on 1,7 bar with stock m42 pistons and 135mm M50 rods  and cometic head gasket it work fine witout problems.

Thanks for the reply. OK, I am one step closer to building my dream M42 motor. How about the pistons? Any idea what piston I am able to use for the motor? Cause I am going to bore it up to 86mm and hopefully there will be some forged pistons I can use.

There is MM pistons but its out of my budget. Hoping for something lower in cost.

My aim is around 9-9.5 compression and run 1 bar of boost on an Eaton M90 supercharger. Aiming for 300HP with a 2L motor.

Thanks!

Btw, I found some Wossner pistons from their website. Only problem is I have no idea what the specification means and which are the ones I need to get my desired compression.

Engine + Driveline / Ebay Full Length Header?
« on: July 12, 2008, 07:43:47 AM »
I have bought one of these 4-1 headers on ebay and still waiting for it to arrive.

IMHO, these 4-1 headers are good if you want more top end power and don't mind losing low end.

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / Does MM offer Custom Pistons & Conrods
« on: July 06, 2008, 08:57:51 AM »
I tried emailing them several times regarding this but I didn't get any reply thus i am posting here (I live in Singapore so its quite impossible to call them).

I am planning for an engine with MM pistons and conrods as well as crank (unless I can find the crank elsewhere). However, I am looking at a compression of 10:1 rather than 8.6:1, thus I am wondering if MM or any other companies offer a compression of 10:1 for the M47 crank configuration.

Thanks!

Thank you wery much for the info ;)
One more question, do I have to change someting in the block, if I want to install m47 crankshaft? And what will happen if I use m47 crankshaft + m47 connecting rods? I don`t like the idea of boring the block to 86.5... I preffer not to touch the block

Hi! Where did you managed to get the M47 crankshaft? Cause I am looking for one.

Thanks!

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / How Much HP can the M47 crank take?
« on: July 06, 2008, 05:21:23 AM »
Hi! Any idea how much can the M47 crankshaft take? I intend to buy the crank from MM but have no idea how much HP it can handle. I intend to run a boosted engine at ~300-350HP so I am wondering id the crank can handle or will give way.

Thanks!

Engine + Driveline / Dyno Results
« on: July 05, 2008, 08:42:17 AM »
Wow! Nice results. Considering you did nothing except for a chip upgrade, I have the say its fantastic results.

I have seen on CATCAMs website that they offer 290 degress cams with 12mm lift. Does such cams work well with supercharged engines? Cause I have heard that overlapping of cams will cause a drop in the boost pressure, thus resulting in a lost of power.

thanks!

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / Can M42 Handle 2 bar?

sorry. my post is off topic…
people say NA is bettAR than boost because when someone typically builds an engine with a turbo in mind, they make the CR around 8.5 or lower. This results in little or no low-end grunt. that and just so they can brag on the forums that they can drink beer out of their pistons. :P  (I've seen it more than twice.)

you can build a great engine that has 11.5 CR with a turbo and still produce great power. you just have to have someone that knows a lot about engine mechanics and thermal efficiency to help you accomplish the task. people have done this in the past. it's not an impossible task, and if you do it right, you won't destroy your engine.

You still get the low-end grunt that makes driving a car in the canyons and through traffic fun without having to be near redline.

I have been thinking about what you mentioned and I think I may decide to go for a high compression engine and install a blower running at lower boost (say around 0.5-1 bar). This way, I can still get reasonable power and fuel consumption won't go too high.

Fuel prices have been going up like nobody business in my country. Now 1L of Shell V-power (that ~0.22 gallon) cost USD1.65. That means 1 gallon cost USD7.50

Bad bearing will make noise all the time.

You have scared yourself because you lost some of your oil. And you most likely didn't even loose all of it. The dipstick only shows about 1.5-2 qts, your M42 takes 5.5 qts. So just because it doesn't show on the dipstick doesn't mean you fried your engine.

The rattling has probably always been there and you just now noticing it because your 'hyper sensitive' because of what happened. Probably just the normal chain rattle on high mileage M42's.

Regarding your crank, its probably already damaged anyways. These M42's have only 1/2 a thrust face bearing which does not provide enough support to the crankshaft. Every M42 crank I have seen has had more then normal wear on the thrust surface. 2 out of 4 M42s where scrap. and the 3rd out of 4 was just barely within tolerance. So basically don't worry about the crank, its probably already damaged.

One other thing, be very aware that the M42 is a very expensive engine to rebuild properly. I can build a 400HP 350 for the cost of a stock M42 rebuild. They are roughly about $2500-$3000 to do them right.

As a note, pay attention to what your doing next time you do a oil change. These are not kids lego's your playing with. Also please put add your location to your profile so people know where your at. If your in SoCal, I rebuild BMW engines.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, I won't be able to get help from anyone in the forum. This is because I lived in Singapore.

i would most definatly have the bearing changed asap.

Your crank might not be damaged as of yet, but with a noisy bearing it's just a matter of time.

Also you can pick a convinient time to do the rebuild.

Actually I don't mind the crank being damaged. This is because I will be using a different crank when I rebuild the engine (going to use the 88mm diesel crank).

I did something extremely stupid yesterday which result in possibly a spun/damaged bearing. When I was installing the oil filter, I did not fit the copper crush washer properly, causing oil to spray thru a tiny gap.

The problem is I didn't notice it till I was travelling and saw smoke coming out from my hood there is a distinct burnt smell. When I stop and checked, I realise the dip stick is literally dry! I

The problem now with the engine is that there is an occassional rattling noise. It happens only after I have travel for around 20-30min. When its cold, there is no noise. Is the noise cause by a spun bearing? I also get the burnt smell coming from my aircon once in a while.

The car seems to be running fine right now with new oil. However, how long can an engine last with damaged bearings if I maintain the engine properly? I am planning a full rebuilt at end of the year with new pistons/rods/crank, thus I don't need the current internals, only the block itself. Just hoping it will last till then.

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / Can M42 Handle 2 bar?

I have been trying to plan this one out for a little while now (like a week).

I was trying to figure out how one could make the turbo take over where the supercharger stops, with out much over lap...

Plus there's plumbing, engine management, and where to put it all....

But still I've been thinking about it.

I have also been planning for quite a while and trying to solve the issue of over lap. After some consulation etc, I think the best solution is to use a throttlebody. The intake will split into 2, 1 going to the blower and the other directly to the intake manifold (the TB will sit on this pipe).

The ECU will monitor the pressure in the pipe. once is has reach certain pressure. The TB will go WOT so air will bypass the blower.

Whay don't you use two turbos, one small and one big,if you whant to go that  BIG

I did thought about having twin turbos but my car is RHD so there isn't much space on the exhaust side. How I wish I could saw that @#$% steering column off lol.......

It must hold much more than that if  you have a proper tuning and after market head blots.I'm planing to go 10psi veeeeeery soon, like next week.

Thats nice! Do tell us your results.

Btw, are you using standalone ECU or a piggyback. This is because I am trying to save some cash by using a piggyback like unichip instead of a standalone ecu.

Thanks!

If you do all the modifications you listed above, the m42 should have no problem with 2 bar.  There was a guy who turbocharged his m10 with stock internals and ran about 30 psi for I think 2 years before it finally blew.  I am not sure if I have all the details correct but I think he was making around 330rwhp with hardly any other mods besides the turbo.

Wow! 30PSI on stock internals!
