Suspension / H&R cab-specific springs on sedan?
« on: December 17, 2008, 12:58:57 PM »
We actually had a 325is with cabrio-specific springs on it.  They're on my cabrio now. :D  It resulted in a ridiculous amount of rake due to the fact that the cabrio has another 100lbs+ over the rear wheel versus a 325.  The fact that a cabrio 325 outweighs a 318is by over 400 lbs would have me very concerned about using cabrio springs.

Engine + Driveline / Clutch Judder & Axle Tramp
« on: December 14, 2008, 03:34:17 PM »
I need to report back on this thread too.  Along with the hoppy rear end, I've also had issues with the clutch takeup being grabby.  I decided to try "resurfacing" the clutch by revving it up and slipping the clutch a couple times.  Not the best way to prolong the life of the clutch, but I'm happy to report that all my clutch grabbiness is gone, as is the hopping rear end.  The clutch doesn't slip at all, either.  I think the PO (who was a female) probably had the clutch redone and then never really drove it hard.  Over time deposits built up on the mating surfaces making for inconsistent engagement.

So I replaced my rear diff bushing and that seemed to help my rear axle tramp problem... until today.  It doesn't happen as often now... but it's still there somewhat.
My 318 has the same issue.  We replaced the diff mount and it helped a little, but I'm pretty sure it's sub frame mounts that are at the core of the problem.

Exterior / How to remove the front bumper??

Yeah, I've figured the side markers out. But I did try unscrewing the turn signals and after getting the screw out, they were almost stuck in there and I didn't want to mess around with them. Is there a way to pry them out?
Number 2 in the pic I posted is a gasket.  That's what's making your old ones tight.  Even if you take off the entire bumper you'll still have to pry the lens cover off the bucket.  Just do it.  Worst case you break one, but you have new ones, right?

If all you're doing is the lenses they unscrew from the front of the car.  The side markers pop out.  It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes to do all 4, and that's if you take the time to take the bulb out and clean the reflectors for the turn signals.

Jumped in on the GB thread on R3V.  I assume it's all part of the same deal since the quoted message from Mark is identical. :D

I'll take one.  91 octane.  I can be found on bf.c as a moderator or you can send an email to timrmoore at gmail.com when the time comes to order one.  For some reason the PM system here usually doesn't get to me.

Rewinds aren't too bad, but ET0 will give you the sportmax look.  If you're debating these 2 the Kopis win hands down, IMO.  I'm pretty sure Mel is out of the 17" Kopis right now though; I think I read it on R3V.

Tim

BTW, have you checked out all the specE30 wheels at the Rewind pricepoint?  Team Dynamics, the new Tire Rack wheel, etc?  If you're going to go cheap you might as well get something that's a direct bolton and strong.

Your interior looks amazing - I'm jealous of what you've got going on here.  The small tires definitely throw it off but it looks like they still have some life so whatever.  Whats with the old giant 3rd brake light?
Good eye.  You're the first one to comment on it.  The black rear deck with premium speakers came out of a totalled '87 325is that we're slowly parting out.

Hey all.  I picked this car up a couple of months ago and finally got around to taking some pics of it.  It's a '91 318i with 260k+ on the still-functioning cluster.  I paid $1100 for it and it's worth every penny.  It's been extremely well maintained and other than a bad diff mount it needs nothing.  It does have dents in both driver's side doors but it doesn't bother me, and if I stumble over a brilliantrot 4 door I'll address it; otherwise I think I'll just drive it and save money for the track car and cabrio.

I swapped in some fogs, US ellips with 55w 4500k HIDs, a full minty vinyl sport interior, shift knob, some weaves (with seriously undersized tires) and a crappy headunit I had sitting around.  I gave it some tuneup love with plugs, oil change, a thermostat/coolant, fixed a leaky fuel line between the hardlines and the fuel rail and now I am enjoying it as a DD.

Soonish plans include an armrest and the aforementioned diff mount (both in my possession already), swapping the head unit for a better Alpine, replacing the rear bumper trim and repainting all the trim and lower panels black again, and a polish of the paint.  The oxidization clearly shows that the car was repainted on the passenger fender and front door.

Enjoy.

This thread should just go away, IMO.  Ironically, it will also take me back to 0 posts if it's deleted.  Heh. :)
