Last years, Ive got all these problems.

If you have do all you said, are you sure your fan clutch is okay?

Also, is really overheating or its the gage who told you an overheating problem?

Test with a Laser temp gun on the engine block. I dont know what is the correct temp, but with my car, for normal running at good temp, I got 60-65 celcius.

For my case, my gauge still notice sometimes that my temp is bad...but i hit the dash and everything come back okay lol......

So, also check your cooling sensor.....be carefull, this one is hard to replace because you have to go under the intake....and everyone with a m42 know its pain to go under the intake...

Good luck!

FPR is good, and I even opened up the ECU/DME to se if there was anything that looked fried or corroded. It checked out. Put new plugs in and tried to fire it up. It turns over abut 5 times fast, then hesitates, then 5 times fast, then hesitates, and every now and then I get a pop and smoke come out the tail pipe. the smoke smells like burning newspaper. Kind of odd.

I think I need to do a leak down and see whats up. Maybe I have a gummed up valves or my rings are gone and there is not enough compression to fire it up.

Burned newspaper? So its look like you have shit in your engine and after a moment the engine stop by itself. What you have to do when you have too much alcool in your blood? Ur drunk and you cant walk good anymore. So, you have to drink water to be clean again....

So, if everything hard and long have been done, be quick and check everything that its impossible to be. You can find somes interested things.

I got some suggestion for you, based on my experience with E30 with M42 engine, i call this the "BMW E30 PANZERTANK CHECK-UP" ::p

#1 - Check fuel and air filter . Somes peoples were saying me that my trottle position sensore were dead when it was my fuel filter had failed and the engine was eating a lot of sh*t....

#2 - Air filter.... Is clean? Remove the first part of the air intake and check in the trottle body and in airbox for water, sand or maybe paper.....or dead butterfly...why not? It's easy and quick.

#3 - WIRE! Check ALL your vacuum hose. I was unable to push the gaz to the floor completely because of a failed vacuum. Start to a good level, replace old and dirty vacuum hose, maybe some old oil is blocking.....Its happened with my car.

#4 - Profil gasket is okay? Check, check and check again. This is the first reason of problems with these car.

#5 - Gasket : No leak? Checked everywhere and no leak? If you have old and dry gasket burning in the cylinder chamber its can be bad.....

#6 - Flush the cooling system .It's cheap and it solve a lot of problems. Buy a prestone product for this. It's cheap and it will take you 1 hours. Fast and easy. Do this 2 or 3 times. Look on BMW do it yourself website for this.

#7 - What kind of oil do you use?

#8 - Do you put always the right fuel in your car?

#9 - CRANKSHAFT position sensor? If the sensor fail, you will unable to start the car. Also, if the engine have a problems this sensor, I THINK, will make you unable to start the care to prevent damage.

#10 - Water in the fuel tank can be hard to detect. Drain your fuel tank. If you have dirt or water you will see.

#11 - UNDER THE INTAKE. You see nothing. You have to dismantle everything of here and see if there's a problems.

If you CANT find the problems, keep us informed of all your habbit with your car for things we have not thinking about.

After all of this, think about 2 or 3 hours at a good bmw garage, they know all to think about bmw and its will save you a lot of times....but not money instead...loll.....;)

Good luck..!!!

Engine + Driveline / Official OIL THREAD
« on: August 27, 2008, 11:30:46 PM »
Hi everyone!

Ive read a lot on the internet regarding what kind of oil I have to put in my M42...

I also called "BMW VILLE DE QUEBEC" and they told me that my car require castrol 5W30.

Another people recommend syntec oil, but other people said that it not good for the gasket and make a oil leak...

Another people recommend Castrol 20W50. But, another people said " 20w50 is NOT recommended in an M42 (or any other DOHC BMW engine) it will starve the HVAs (lifters) 10w30 or 40 is fine for the M42 (latter DOHC engines require 5w30). "

SO, WHAT IS ORIGINALLY RECOMMENDED BY BMW FOR THE 1991 318I M42B18 ENGINE???

Noo, im really sorry! When I go to the bmw shop Ive forgot my camera...But, the 8 intake valve were completely bend. But, the two one who caused the engine stop were really bad to see! lolll.....

I think my reaction have been good. Engine were not totaly destroy.

Now, my engine is running really smooth and have a little funny sound like a turbo, I dont know how to describe this.

But now, other bmw problems get on my nerve : STUPID TOMATO JUICE CAN SOUND UNDER THE CAR AT 1500-1800 RPM......

I will try to fixe this soon!

23:27 GMT -5 here!

As I said, Im keeping you informed. Im going to the bmw shop tomorrow morning.

My pocket told me this aftertoon : " WTF? You will empty me for this fuc****g stupid car? Are you crazy? You put another 2300$ on this old 1991 shit? Are you okay? In one years, you put 2500$ for the car, and 5000$ in repair and maintenance, you can have a brand new hyundai accent for this price"

I said to my pocket : " Yeah but......What's about the "ultimate driving machine"? With a hyundai, I will not have the feeling that im driving a tank! I will not feel the smooth bilstein suspension! I will not be able to drift all the winter simply by pushing the gaz to the floor, I will not be able to take turn at 80 MPH where the other car are not able to.....and other hyundai driver will not comment my car in a parking lot at the shopping mal, only BMW driver do that"

And my pocket finaly said : " And wtf are you doing right now, ur are talking to your pocket!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did im crazy? No, I like my german Tiger tank! :D

Im following up the thread to help people in the future with this kind of problem......

Engine have been open today!!! :D

peerless : You got 50% of the problems.

The timing chain guide was still okay.....But one the bolt who the retaining it have been not tightened correctly...so the screw have make a bad timing by get caught between chain and gear, timing chain slips over teeth and result in a total mass destruction........BUT!!!

Intake valve are over. Exhaust valve are still great but will be changed (Im not taking any chance with a little degree..;)...)

My bmw specialist told me : " This is another exemple of how tough bmw engine are!!! You broke the intake valve and piston are still in good condition..."

I will post again tomorrow or next week to keep you informed!

Okay. After calculating what I have to replace, Im not sure anymore....

New old engine with 192 000 KM:
-If the engine have not running since 3 years, that will be pain.....
-1300$ right to my door and 500$ parts (maybe more) and 5-600$ labour...
-Job will be do by a good mecanical but.....im not sure he know everything about bmw....

My old engine:

Engine Block is still good, new water pump, new thermostat...

Finally, im not sure about what to do here...lol....Tomorrow im going to a specialised imported car shop and the owner look to be very nice with bmw (He repair and rebuilt bmw, mercedes, porsche, maserrati car since 25 years)

He said to my brother of a well rebuilt bmw engine can be still good to another 350 000 KM with no trouble.....and he can make a warranty on that!

I will keep you informed my friends!

Hi all!

I think I have find one. That have been very hard. I find one with 192 000 K (120 000) for 1000$ + 300$ shipping.

1300$. Now im just asking if its better to me, once the new old one arrived, to replace : chain guide, timing chain, tensionner and water pump ?

I think its what I have to do to have a reliable engine....no? What other thing I must change before swap on the other one?

(I want to have somekind of peace....)

The fact is that the engine have 340 000 km and I just dont want to open it! It's because I dont have time to do this,Im a business owner and im working everyday, and If I pay someone to do this, he will told me that my engine is to rebuilt or something, and that will cost me 200$ just to know that....and I already know its an old engine at end of life....BUT! Im looking for a low mileage M42, and if I find one (I have no choice to find one, I want to keep my old school E30), at this moment I will open the old one to see what happening.

So, for the moment, Im driving a E36 with climate control still working, and I really enjoy it on july :P
