Exterior / A Wild Thought...Swap the roof for another one..

Yeah that is true..quite rare...despite its rarity I don't suppose its worth much more than one with a sunroof ?..(still not considering selling it)

Exterior / A Wild Thought...Swap the roof for another one..
« on: September 15, 2011, 09:10:46 PM »
So I recently got a 91 318is...almost the same car I sold a year ago and regretted..so i finally got myself back into one!

Except..this one does NOT have a sunroof..At first I thought wow that is rare, and liked the idea but its really a bummer not have a sunroof in a bimmer...I think a lot of the "experience" is lost without one...

So it was someone else who said, as a joke, "why not just have the roof cut off and swap for one with a sunroof in it...?"

Could it really be all the involved..? obviously not a diy but how long would it really take a shop to do..? a day?? Has anyone even thought of doing this or even better, had experience with this??

This could be something I'll really consider.. mainly because I got such a great example of a 318is...well under 200k on it, not a spot of rust..and not so much as a ding on the entire body..So I probably wont have any plans to sell this car.. but that sunroof delete is killing me..

Am I crazy? What do you think?

Interior / Trying to fit an Mtech 1 steering wheel on..!
« on: September 09, 2011, 10:12:17 PM »
as you all know the m42 has a standard airbag steering wheel..

i just purchased an mtech 1 wheel (the one that is found on some 325 models, the one with the motorsport stripe on the bottom not the M badge)

i bought a new slip ring for it, i keep tightening it down and its both: snagging something, most likely the blinker release for a keep getting a snapping sound..and the whole wheel wobbles..i cant seem to get it to firm..its almost like im missing a bushing to keep it from moving around the column..i have the metal bushing that goes down the column threads..i tried taking it out, putting it in after the wheel is installed, before..nothing..

im at a loss..please help cuz guys!

Thanks!

Exterior / Restoring faded paint - help
« on: August 01, 2011, 07:53:37 PM »
Just picked up a 91 318is coupe..

its in very good condition, 100% rust free..

However..the paint it faded, scratched..needs love.

I have been detailing cars for a very long time on my own cars..But i havent had to face a challenge like this.. It is not 100% faded yet or heavily oxidized..

I know for sure that regular off the shelf products from autozone just plain suck.. but i did come across, in the body repair section, McGuire's 105 ultimate compound..roughly 32$ for the bottle.. Anyone have experience with this?

I have a high speed, direct spin buffer..Not Orbital..those arent very useful often

Does anyone have a valuable thread they can point me to or tell me what particular products have the best result without spending a fortune..? And also trick of the trade techniques to using wool pads..?

Thanks Guys!

General Topics / A Sad Farewell..
« on: August 29, 2010, 01:43:55 PM »
After 6 proud years of ownership, my gorgeous E30 has been sold..

I recently graduated college and working full time..Great news and all however i discovered that my commute would be the test of patience with my E30...I have never had to drive it as much until now..45min to work each way...90+ degrees out every day..with no AC of course.. My tolerance grew weaker each day.. with competitive urban driving, i felt as though the 1.8 simply couldn't keep up nor satisfy my basic needs of comfort and reassurance. Every day i waited for something to go wrong...But It held up.. i figured find something newer before something turns..
Looking for a newer car, it took weeks.. I have always been meticulous, attentive to detail and well aware of what a car is worth is most importantly, what a car is Not worth.. I dealt with many different kinds of salesmen but they all seemed to know everything..yeah right.. this was my favorite line of all - after i told a salesman that the car i was looking at, had something wrong with the heated seats (they did not work..), he continued to attempt to convince me that it was a "feature" - that because it was too hot out, the seats wouldn't work...hahaha wow.
Anyway - looking for a 2003ish bmw 3 series, the search was difficult..Has to be a 5 speed i told all of them..but i only found a couple..each of them reasonably priced..I come to find that after i make my selection of a beautiful 2004 325ci coupe 5spd...that my lack of credit experience wouldn't allow me to finance an "older" car.. I have great credit but not enough they told me....fair enough..but this meant i had to put off my desire to get into another bmw...sad realization let me tell you..bmws are all i know..in the blood.. after considering jettas/gli's amazingly i left german engineering behind all together..Got myself into a 2004 mazda rx8 6spd red/red.... I was pleased..and have been since to own it..It is NO BMW however it goes! 1.3liter rotary engine.."It goes like Heck" - Jeremy Clarkson.  I did some research - it has the same 0-60 as a 2005 330ci zhp.  Impressive. Although its well equipped, fast and responsive, it is merely a credit builder for me.. after about 6-12 months, my search will be back on.. driving across the memorial bridge in DC one morning, i found myself head to head with an E30..As i reached for my flashers...i realized i was no longer in a bmw, and if i had flashed my lights, the e30 owner would have been a little confused..it hit me at that moment..that two days after my new car purchase, i had already missed my E30...So I want/need the roundel back.. So for now, I'll have to keep my CCA card at home in a drawer somewhere.. but i'll be back.

   Robert

Engine + Driveline / Signs of bad axle shafts?
« on: June 06, 2010, 06:59:06 PM »
Im hearing some rattling from the rear end when accelerating, and slowing down, when gears are engaged.  most frequently around 2-3000rpm... No vibrations, or harsh clunk noises, but there is definitely a lot of rattle..bad shafts? or drive shaft bearing? thanks
