Engine + Driveline / Im BMW stupid and I need to fix some things
« on: December 08, 2009, 05:37:29 PM »
On your first problem it sounds like maybe you have the hot start problem. Look at the sticky at the top of the engine & driveline section titled " Did we ever figure out the "Hot Start Problem". I had the same problem and the answer to it was in that thread.

I'm not real sure about your second question, I'll let others chime in on that one.

Good luck...

Not saying this is your particular problem but when I bought my car 3 years ago it had the same symptoms. A new\used transmission fixed it.

Engine + Driveline / WTF? Are these bolts....or.....

Pull the fuel pump and run a couple of wires from the pump connecter to a battery. Then you'll know if it's good or not.

Hard to say where your leak(s) are for sure but the water pump seal would be a good place to look. I had a hard find leak recently that caused me to remove the fan clutch assy, fan shroud and water pump pulley to actually get a good look at the bottom side of my water pump before the source was evident.

I know what you mean when you say you don't have the time to fool with it and it's hard to tell a man what to do with his property but I can say this, if I was a little closer to you I'd take it off your hands for the $500, I'm over in KC. Someone will come along here most likely and do just that. Good luck in whichever way you go.

Engine + Driveline / M42 head cooling line ports
« on: March 03, 2009, 05:06:17 AM »
I'm in the beginning throws of an M42 rebuild and while doing the teardown I found out that one of the 2 cooling line hose barbs on the head was badly corroded and broken off flush with the head. Has anyone encountered this that might know if there are replacement barbs for the head? I'm not sure if these are pressed in or screwed in and I didn't want to guess unless I have to. I have tried to find the part numbers for them on realoem.com but have had no luck. They are pictured on one or two of the diagrams but have no part numbers associated with them. By the way, the smaller barb toward the center of the head is the one that broke, the other one by rear of the head does not look that good either. I think I'd be better off addressing both of them now and may have to wing it and fabricate a replacement. Your thoughts, experience or idea's are welcome.

Not hard, remove the bottom back seat to expose the cover plate. Take that off, disconnect the small wire connector a couple of hoses and the four nuts/washers holding the sending unit. Pull the sending unit up and out followed by the pump itself. Maybe 15 minuites. Reverse the process to install the replacement pump.

My fuel pump made some noise too when I first bought my car, 3 weeks later it died. An extra one of these laying around is good to have. I was left stranded at a stop light in the middle of rush hour when mine went out (only time the car let me down). Been able to collect 2 spares since that time for maybe ten bucks total.

From what I can tell in the pics, that car looks pretty good, however in my area the car is overpriced. Pretty much all of these cars are high mileage by now and require some maintenance now and again. Mine has 211,000 on it and I'm doing little things to it all the time, but that's kinda why I like it. It's as much of a hobby to me as it is functional. I'm currently building another motor for it even though the one that's in it is perfectly fine, I also have another tranny waiting in the wings, I just know that things won't last forever and I'll be prepared when the day comes. I'm a regular at the pickNpulls, I really enjoy that part of owning this car too.

Crawl around the car and see what has been done to it starting with the suspension. This is what typically needs attention first, check the exhaust while your under there. Then look under the hood checking for hoses and vacuum lines, are they old and brittle or have they been replaced, is there a lot of oil buildup on the motor (leaks). If the owner will do it, have hime pull the valve cover so you can inspect the timing sprockets, these will probably need replaced soon if they are sharp on the peaks.

Remember, you are really buying a project here not just transportation. You have to decide what stage you want your project to be in. If the car has been serviced for some or all of the things I've mentioned then it might be worth most of his asking price, if not then it's probably not worth it.

Here in the Kansas City area, that car would go for around $2,200 maybe.

Try your local Pick N Pull or the equivalent. I just picked up a tranny, starter, flywheel and a upper oil pan for $107. I think the flywheel cost me $13.

Engine + Driveline / Injector Update
« on: March 30, 2008, 06:23:56 AM »
After a week of running these injectors, Bosch# 0280 150 943 I ended up with 346 miles on 13 gallons of fuel. That puts the mpg @ about 26.6. I was getting about 24 mpg just prior to the swap, conditions were appx 75% highway. I didn't notice any measurable difference with respect to power, maybe a slight increase in pep. I'm about due for new plugs and air filter, so I might be able to get my mpg up a bit more. I believe I have an effective, safe alternative to the originals at pennies on the dollar at the local pick n pulls, a plentiful supply at that.

Engine + Driveline / Fuel Injectors

All the chart testing data that I've found shows that they were either tested at 3 bar or 43.5 psi which are the same. That would appear to be a standard.

From everything I've read, the stock "0280 150 714" fall in the 18-19# range at 3 bar.

They are also yellow which confirms the 18-20# range. If they were 230cc, they would have to be dark blue or black. Theres nothing wrong with 230cc injectors in this engine if you decide to open up the intake a bit, but I don't think thats a stock size. Some BMW sites list these injectors as 230cc at 4 bar because thats the pressure some later engines used.

OK, what ever flow rate they have is what I want to match or get as close as I can. What I'm saying here is that from some charts the flow reates are different from other flow charts. 230cc for the 714's was the highest flow that I saw but it was also the highest rate that I saw for the 943's as well. It's not that I believe that they are that high it's that they are comparable to each other.http://www.injectorcleaning.co.uk/flow.htm from your second link, shows that they are identical at 200cc @ 3 bar. That is the "bingo" I'm looking for.
