This might be a good place to start http://www.m42club.com/forum/index.php?topic=7757.105

Thanks for replying, definitely was helpful.  I had some brain fade when I was posting--since I had done the "mess under the intake" I was no longer sure about the revised coolant path.

I believe the thermostat had failed, so I replaced it.  And my sister was driving the car so I think the car was low on coolant as a result of overheating.  I replaced the thermostat (I drilled a very small hole at the top to facilitate bleeding) and it's been keeping temperature and the heat also works now.

Yes, I agree with the water pump impeller--I always use metal impellers since I've heard bad things about plastic impellers failing, especially with the E36.  And it was a bastard of a job--involving a 4' pry bar--to replace to original water pump.  I've since used anti-seize when installing water pumps on the M42s I've worked on.

Hi all,
my 1991 318iS was overheating, so I turned on the cabin heater (on a hot July day) so I could limp home and figure out the issue.  But the problem was, that there was no heat coming from the vents. I found this odd, since the car always had good heat.
So I'm wondering whether a stuck thermostat can cause this (no cabin heat)?

The water pump is not making any noises, so I'm focusing on the thermostat for now.

Might want to check your driveshaft center support bearing while you're under there.

Nice tweak.  I always mean to do that myself; i guess I will some day.
You might also want to replace the electrolytic capacitors. They typically have a 20-30yr lifespan.  At least 2 of the 3 that I see in your pics are polar, so make sure you orient + and - in the correct way.

Rough/high idle after the cleaning could be attributed to leftover cleaner that needs to evaporate. Or perhaps a vacuum leak was introduced when parts were disassembled/reassembled.  Also, when the power is disconnected, the car will tend to run a bit rough until the ECU learns the adaptations.

There is no real way to accurately play with the AFM without a WBO2 sensor.  I wouldn't suggest tampering with it.

Engine + Driveline / Re: Thrust Bearing Replacment Require Machining?

Yes, machining is required for the cap.  It's been a while since I had it done but it is necessary.

Nice progress.
You know, with the availability of 3D printing, it would not entirely be too difficult to make a set of sliding trumpets ala the Mazda R26B.  Use a cheap Arduino or Raspberry Pi device to drive a pair of servos to control the trumpet length depending on rpm.
Hmmm.

This looks like a super fun project!   Looks great so far.  I'd make sure to have enough meat on the flange where the fasteners pass through, and be mindful of any weight that adapters need to support. Perhaps a gusset rib can be added to the underside of the adapter, if this is a concern.

You should need to replace only part 10. (part 11 goes between the cylinder head and the lower part of the intake.)

Still got it.  Was going to put it on ebay because of lowballers on CL but have not had a chance to list it yet.

I'd certainly make some inquiries about swapping the top plate out.  The Denso unit appeared in many vehicles, so I wouldn't be surprised if the appropriate plate was available to allow you to swap to a more generic (and cheaper) option.
