I just changed the fuel filter and it runs much better I'm thinking about pulling the plugs and checking them also just to be sure. This weekend I'm doing so. We'll see what happens

thank you! Is there a build on here where someone went that route? with stock pistons and thicker head gasket engines and a turbo? how much boost can it handle that way?

Yeah I see what you guys are saying I might go with turnermotorsports bearings and what do you guys say about the pistons? Thanks for all the info guys!

so if I understand correctly you guys say 6 cylinder crank bearings will work on the m42? and the 6cyl is it the m50 series or m20 series? Also as someone has mentioned should I do pistons also? if so which should I use. I honestly would want to put some boost later. Is it possible to build a bottom end now to rebuild the head with better specs later? If I wanted to go the boost route I would like to keep the m42 crank and maybe bore the cylinders which I have gotten a quote and wasnt that much to do. Just all depends on the pistons prices and what you guys tell me. It's my first build and I would LOVE to do it right  8)

I'm looking to rebuild but I have seen some builds that members have done and they are pretty awesome. With that being said someof these builds are pretty costly! So I just wanted to know when it comes to things that should be done what are they which you have answered. Then what are things that can be replaced with better parts that arent costly but are good things to do in the process of rebuilding the engine.

So I sourced a late m42b18 for my 93 e36. I want to take it to a shop to check the head and bottom end to make sure everything is ok. I also want to change piston rings and crank shaft bearings. Basicly come out with a "new" engine. As this is my first time around the m42, what do you guys recommend to look for or put on the engine? Things like headstuds maybe small upgrades that are budget friendly? Let me know!

Engine + Driveline / loss of power on e36 m42

So last Sunday I cruised with the car for a few hours. Couple windy roads but never really pushed it just really cruised with it 35~45 mph. So on the way back home I get on the highway and again I just ease into speed ~80 mph and I get a rotten egg smell but there was a new vehicle ahead of me and thought maybe it's just his cats and the smell went away. Well a little later on down the road my car started acting up. I pushed it full throttle and it went nowhere. Before in 5th if I floored it as soon as it hit 4000 rpm the dasc would do it's thing and quickly climb up on speed but now it can't even get out of its way. Going up a hill full throttle it keeps the rpms steady won't even budge I can't even feel the dasc coming on. Another thing I noticed is when idle the exhaust sounds a little different and the flow of it is different. It is no longer steady it's almost like I have a v twin engine without the sound. What could this possibly be? I'm thinking a clogged cat by there is no CEL and I have an oxygen sensor after the cat so shouldn't it show on the dash if the car is bad?  the only code I could pull of is 1286 for the knock sensors but I was told from someone else that the code doesnt mean much since they have had it for 7 years  even after changing them and nothing changed. What do you guys suggest since you guys are the gods of these engines :) I really need help with this thing I dont know where to look anymore. So far I havent done anything to it other than testing the coils and looking for vaccum leaks. I'm ordering a fuel filter although it was changed two years ago its the cheapest and easiest place to start.

Any thoughts? the car is a 1993 bmw 318is 5-speed built in germany

Oh ok thanks for the info  :) also on bimmer forums one of the guys put Volkswagen lifters and shrick cams and his engine is putting out 180HP at the wheels is there anything I can do like that or will increasing the compression alone give me a good push? I'm not looking for crazy power just some mild mods to increase the HPs and torque. Also I know the exhaust bolts are usually hard to get out.. Should I be ready with an extra pair of headers and bolts or will I be ok? Also what do you guys recommend for head studs? Head gasket? I know my head had a bit of gunk under the valves cover so is there a procedure to clean the bottom end to prevent oil clogging the ports?

Once again thanks for the help guys

Not new to the forum but just decided to register on the forum. I'm a member at bimmer forums (dbshiznit) but I feel likes can get much better help here for my problem.

Two days ago while trying to pass a trailer on the interstate I dropped the car down to 4th went around it and when I went to go back into 5th I went from top of 4th gear into 3rd needless to say it was not pretty.. Never has that happened to me I feel stupid... Well now I need you guys advice.

Car is running on three cylinders and I hear a ticking. I think I bent the valves on one of the cylinders. What do you guys think? Should I get another head or rebuild this one? If I rebuild it what upgrades to it could I do to have a few more horses? And since I'm taking the head off what is there for me to do as preventive maintenance? What should I look out for?

I really appreciate the help guys and trust me I really feel horrible about this money shift thing so don't bash me about it.
