Engine + Driveline / New t-chain tensioner is lazy?
« on: May 20, 2010, 11:03:44 AM »
the first is a m42/44, the second for a e39 6cyl, is that number recommended, or just a common x-ref ?

long extension(s) snaked thru the mc booster/ intake mess for drivers side.

pass side is alot easier but header might get in the way... still need an extension.

don't overtighten these nuts, top or bottom of subframe or you can overstress the mount and kill it prematurely.

Engine + Driveline / Noise from driveline

Is the guibo touching the bottom of the shift linkage or mechanism?  Are the tranny mounts or tranny alignment allowing the aformentioned parts to contact each other while rotating?  any contact from a loose or hanging heatshield?

Engine + Driveline / New t-chain tensioner is lazy?

oem tensioner went in yesterday, and was alot quieter.  not totally silent on start up, but less noisy.

I went thru 2 aftermarkets (febi/bilstein) in which one was completely exploded in the box, staining the box in came in.  This new one from bmw is bathed in oil, carefully sealed in its own bag, with oil resistant install instructions wrapped around it.

The two tensioners are identical visually, and have a somewhat notchy feel.

I plan to play with oil weights, but this car has been running on 2050 redline synth almost its ENTIRE life.

I am 100% sure, I have had that issue on another m42 car, and this sound is totally different.

Anyone else with a lazy and/or notchy tensioner out there in m42 land?

Are you sure it's not the valve lifters bleeding down?

Ok,

I know this has been discussed to no end, but I had what sounded as a tensioner starting to fail, and replaced it with the new updated m44 version (febi/bilstein) brand.  Installed it unsprung, as discussed in many threads.

I now have a fairly noisy (stone cold startup) chain rattle, and decided to pull the valve cover and inspect.

Sprockets look perfect, rails look great, and chain is in very good shape as well, with no signs of slapping the v/cover or timing chain case.

Now.. I'm thinking I have a lazy tensioner, since the noise goes away after warm up (3-5 mins) or normal driving.

Letting the car sit for 10-15 mins yields this noise again (not as severe, but noticable) upon start up.

This engine has been over maintained since new by the PO, and I have buckets of records.  It's lived on 1040 and 2050 redline oil since 36k miles.

I'm getting ready to order an OEM Genuine BMW m44 tensioner, since this one seems a little notchy and lazy.

How smooth did your (new) tensioner move in and out ?

I just tried looking thru the oil cap and barely saw the sprockets, using a very bright LED flash light.  I could not see much past the top rail bridge under the cap.

My new m44 tensioner was installed last week, and when the engines cold the chain racket is pretty loud.  This is my 3rd m42 e30, and is the noisiest so far.

Forever and a day. Remove the clutch fan in the winter. It helps.

how exactly did you do this?  I've got a stuck tstat, and norcal winters aren't that cold lately...   I'm only 1.2 miles fr the freeway, and a 10 mile commute at fwy speeds equals 1/8th on the temp gauge.

I've had 2 previous m42 powered cars with over 200k, and never missed a beat.  I've also got a pair of black leather cabrio sport seats for sale, fronts only.  Hope this helps...

send me a PM if interested in the seats ,and if you're not in california, shipping won't be cheap!

I didn't bother hooking up the delayed pc board side of the wiring...  12v goes to red, ground to brown wires...

How does the VW dome stay in the panel?  What I mean is, after modifying the existing panel, does the VW dome light have clips, screws or plastic prongs that grab the modified panel, which keeps it secured and from dropping out?

Any pics of the back side of the "new" dome?

when dremeling the panel, you need to take material away slowly, just enough to keep it tight.  At that point, the checkpanel keeps tension against the new dome assembly, and holds it all in snug.

kool action foto, close your eyes then open them... see how it turns on and off?  :D;)
