I've had mine for a year and a half and haven't taken pictures yet, which is pathetic.  I'll have to rectify that issue!

I guess no Toronto area E30 get-togethers coming up anytime soon?  The maxbimmer get-togethers can be far too big!

Suspension / E36 Steering Rack Swap?? Details...
« on: November 01, 2008, 11:52:42 AM »
Has anybody done this upgrade at a shop?  If so, how much is typical for the change including parts and labour?  I'd like to upgrade my E30 rack to a quicker E36 or Z3 rack, but haven't been able to get concrete advice.  I'd like not only quicker steering, but heavier too, as mine is way too loose on the highway.  Advice would really be appreciated.

The consensus, despite a few contrarians, is that this is a very valuable swap for the E30.  I've been toying with the idea of getting the swap done, because the steering is the only serious complaint that I have with my '91 318iS.  I've had the control arms replaced recently too, which improved matters slightly, but there's a long way to go.

My complaints are that the steering is far too disconnected at highway speeds, especially when not pointing straight ahead.  Not only is the steering too slow, but it's also way too light.  If I'm driving briskly in my '97 Jetta TDI, I have a firm grip on the wheel and great control.  In the BMW, it almost seems that it needs a delicate touch, and a firm grip only makes matters worse.

Long story short - we know generally speaking that an E36 or Z3 rack is quicker, and that's great.  What happens to the weight of the steering with this mod, especially at high speeds?  Will it get heavier?

Also, I'd go to a mechanic to get the swap done - what sort of prices should I expect to be fair for this mod?

Hopefully somebody can enlighten me :)

Ah yes, heated seats!  That's the one feature my E30 doesn't have, but my previous one did and I loved them!

I ended up picking up a Nak CD-300 for $99, so I'm really happy about that!  The store I got it from should still have some more in stock.  These are refurbished units, and they look fantastic.  The $99 price was for Boxing Week though, so likely it would be higher now.  I'll have the unit installed in a couple of months when my E30 comes out of hibernation.

I've found a source for Nakamichi stereos in Toronto so I'm pretty happy about that!  They are expecting a shipment of CD-300's which are on sale for about one week for Boxing Day.  Whatever doesn't sell will be going on ebay.  If anybody's interested, either PM me or look out on ebay in the next few weeks!

$200 for a CD500 is a BARGAIN!

Perhaps, but is it really worth double the price of the 300???

Through ebay I found a local stereo shop that's auctioning off a CD-400 unit, and they claim they have a few left to auction as well.  I'll have to keep track of that to see realistically how high it may go.  However, thanks very much for the Amazon link, that may be the way to go!

I know I'm responding to a really old thread, but I need to replace my OEM E30 deck, and the Nakamichi is by far my top choice.  The concerns are 1. availability and 2.  no USB connection, which would be nice.

Are there any new decks that have been released recently that are appropriate for an E30?  Also, I can't find any shops that distribute Nakamichi stereos here in Canada.
