General Topics / Horrible gas mileage out of my M42
« on: January 02, 2008, 05:08:57 PM »
Car still drives nice and strong. I'm not sure when the last time a full tune up was done as I just got the car at the end of October, but I plan on doing one myself ASAP.

Tires PSI is fine. Checked that first.
Not a bad batch of gas either, this has been happening for a while with many different fills from many different stations including the premium "winter" gas.

I know that I have a pretty bad alignment problem that I'm looking to get fixed soon, but I can't see that decreasing my mileage to this extent. The brakes are all brand new. Replaced pads and rotors in November. No drag issues there.

As for Oil I'm running recently changed full synthetic 5w40.

I also can't use the other M42 to diagnose because it's stored for the winter at a different garage and Is being taken out of storage to go get some paint fixed tomorrow.

Just looking for a little help as to where to start on my diagnosis with my current problem. I suspected that I might have been getting pretty bad mileage out of my 318is but wasn't sure becuase my speedo doesn't work 100% of the time but on this last fill I decided to test it as best as I could. What I discovered is that for me to drive approx 220km (140miles) I used approx 35 liters (9.2 Gallons) of 91 octane. This seems to me to be completely ridiculous since in my summer car with the same engine I was getting almost double that.

I don't drive this car any different then my summer M42 but yet I'm loosing almost half my mileage.

I'm going to be getting the car into the garage hopefully within the next week here so I'm looking for some suggestions as to where to start. As a given I plan on going straight to the air filter to see if it's clogged up, but I'm wondering if there's anywhere else I should be looking? Could it be the oxygen sensor?

Thanks for any help guys.

Mike

Exterior / Window tinting. How do I?

Alright thanks guys. I don't really have the patience for trial and error so when I get around to this I'm just going to pay someone else to do it for me.

Does anyone on here do their own tinting? I'm looking to do the rear 3 windows on my diamondshwartz and since there are no laws in my province as to how deep I can go I'm thinking of going with a 15% tint on them. But when I do get around to doing it I'd much rather do it myself then pay someone else to do it so I'm wondering if anyone on here does it themselves, and how hard it is to get it to look good?

Or since I have no experience with it am I better of to pay someone to do it properly?

you guys must have awesome dinnertime conversations...

thanks for sharing... people often refer to the 318is as the spiritual successor to the 2002tii... let us know!

I've heard it as well. My dad actually bought a 91 318is brand new from the dealership way back when. Now I have one.

Wow, I wish my family would buy that many BMWs ;)

I love that tii, I've only seen 1 round-taillight one in person in my life.

I guess i'm lucky to have always had one around then. This car has been in my family just as long as I have, 21 years. Currently the entire car is taken apart down to nothing but the body and it's off for a full restoration right now. Once it comes back we'll be putting it all back together back to OEM spec.

And for anyone interested. New exhaust arrived for my M42 today. Install tomorrow. Pictures to follow. After that the brakes should be here any day.

A few more of the cabbie. She's by far my favorite car.

And the other non-m42 cars that I get to drive on a semi regular basis (these are all either my dad's, mom's or my sisters)

I love the coloer of the cabbie in the background, it's pretty rare on a 4-cylinder car. Is that Diamondschwarz or Lagunengrun(sp)? It almost looks green. Either way, welcome to the club!

I'm colorblind so I couldn't tell you honestly, but I had to check it after someone else pointed it out and the color tag inside the engine bay says it's DS so thats what I'm going with. I think the color will really come back once I give it a proper wax and polish. Just trying to find a day that's warm enough which is getting harder and harder to do.

Haha no bend thankfully. The car is nice and straight, although it pulls to the right these days, but I think the front drivers side brake is dragging so I'm looking forward to getting it all apart and putting the new brakes on.

Here's my new M42 91 318is. Bought it on October 30th and have been driving it since. It needs a new exhaust and brakes. Also the sunroof is broken so I'll be taking that apart to see just what it is that's wrong with it. In the spring I'm planning on lowering it some and hopefully picking up some new summer wheels for it. It also has a lot of paint swirling that I'm going to try and do my best to get rid of. Not too sure what I'll be doing but I'll try and keep a nice detailed photo log of it on here.

And for anyone that asks, that is mine/my dad's 91 318iC in the backround. M42 FTW

Your car was my inspiration towards getting my Diamondschwartz 318is. I don't even remember where I found a picture of your car last year, but it inspired me. I now own one as well, and it sounds like I need to do about as much work to it as you did to yours. I may be in contact with you later with some questions once I start ripping my car apart.
